I am so excited to see all of you made it to year two! This year we will be focusing on dueling. I expect all of you to pay close attention. What is a duel? A duel is a practice in which at least two witches and/or wizards engage in combat. This combat is agreed to be strictly magical. This means that there can be no non-magical means used for the duration of the duel. Why do we duel? There are various reasons for dueling. Witches and wizards duel due to a conflict and use it as a means to end it. There are some who duel to gain power and others who duel in self defence. There are also duel clubs where people duel for fun or to practice. How is the winner of a duel determined? The determination of a winner depends on why the duel was happening. Some duels end only when only one person, or team, is alive. Other duels may end once someone has been forced into submission or has been injured. Emeric was the current holder of the Elder Wand. Egbert, seeking its power sought out Emeric. The duel ended with Emeric being slaughtered. Egbert won the duel which was said to be ferocious. Not much is known of what happened to Egbert after the duel took place. Many speculate that he was forced to duel at some point and lost or was murdered by another seeker of the wand. Harry Potter vs Lord Voldemort- I’m sure all of you have heard of these duels at some time. The one I’m mentioning is the one that took place in 1995 when Harry Potter and Cedric Diggory were transported to the Little Hangleton Graveyard. After Cedric Diggory was murdered, Harry was forced to duel with Lord Voldemort. Voldemort tried to kill Potter using the Killing Curse while Potter simply tried to disarm him. Part of what makes this duel so famous is that Priori Incantatem was triggered. This is how Potter was able to escape unharmed. That’s all for this week.
