By the 1800s Westward expansion had been transpiring significantly in the United States with the gaining of new territories through prominent occurrences including the Louisiana Purchase and the Mexican-American War. As new states were admitted into the union the imperative issue of slavery expansion arose as the states would have to decide if the new additions would utilize the institution of slavery. The preservation of the balance maintained between the number of slave states and free states was prevalent in constituting resolutions to the slavery issues. The issue of slavery expansion in the western territories repeatedly emerged, provoking conflict between Northerners and Southerners because of the balance of power shared between the northern, free states and the southern, slave states. Both sides feared one would become superior and, therefore, oppress the beliefs and abilities of the other side.
Traveling thousands of miles through dangerous paths American pioneers took on hardships as they sought westward in hopes of a better life. The journey westward began in the early 1800s when the US exploded with new territories nearly tripling the United States' size. It all started in 1803 when the US bought the Louisiana Territory from France. Quickly, many farmers picked up their belongings and headed out west to the rich, fertile land for a fresh start. Manifest Destiny was the belief of the American citizens that God gave them the right to move West to conquer the land on it and to spread their values across the continent. There are many good things that happened from the Westward Expansion, such as being able to gain more resources and industrialize the cities. The industrial revolution was a time of new manufacturing processes in Great Britain, Europe, and the United States. Many of these things during this revolution included production methods replacing hand production, and new iron processes.

Government officials were debating about whether or not slavery should be extended into those states.
The Westward Expansion all started when America made the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. There were many benefits from the purchase for the US that the French didn’t realize before they sold it. The purchase gave the US access to the Mississippi river which allowed for expansion of river trade to the North and South from the center of the US. The port city of New Orleans was bought by the US and its prosperity benefited the US greatly. The US sent Lewis and Clark west to investigate the land they purchased.
The Westward Expansion offered an opportunity to aid the growth of the United States and expand its borders. Although there were many conflicts and disagreements between ourselves and others, it was destiny to move west because of overpopulation, new inventions of transportation methods, and new opportunities. In the 19th Century, overpopulation was one of the major reasons for Westward Expansion. Immigrants were flooding into America for new opportunities and new ways of life and there was just not enough land to suffice the needs for all of the people. These immigrants were arriving in America in the port cities on the East Coast.
