Assuming we have all taken a United States history class, we’ve all learned about the civil rights era, and how women had to fight for the rights that they have today. At some point, we all thought that once the 19th Amendment (which granted female suffrage) was passed women would be of equal to a man, no longer making them minorities. However, this is simply not the case. Numerous women in the United States, and around the world today are still faced with injustice and discrimination in terms of their intelligence and career choices. An article entitled “The 5 Biases Pushing Women Out of STEM,” the author, Joan C. Williams reports that “the percentage of women in computer science has actually decreased since 1991.” The fact that the numbers of women working in STEM fields is decreasing shows just how hard it may be for a women to obtain a job in that particular profession.
Virginia Woolf’s statement holds many truths because of the many women that face with hardships and gender discrimination when trying to become a “doctor, a lawyer, or a civil servant” or any other profession where women are considered a minority. Though what woolf says is true, she does not go far enough to explain that these truths will never go away. Heres why it matters,” the author, Ilana Yurkiewicz, discusses the same study by Moss-Racusin. Yurkiewicz focuses her main points on proving that sexism within male dominated professions is real. She says that if people deny the existence of sexism to acknowledge that a “study found that absolutely all other factors held equal, females are discriminated against in science. Sexism exists. It’s real.” Many women apply for a job of course hoping that they get it. So yes, the path for females to receive a job in a male dominated career is generally open, but high position people in charge of hiring, are just choosing not to hire women, even when they have the right qualifications. As a women, I know that if I constantly got rejected from a job position, I would may even stop applying for those certain jobs. The stereotype that women can’t do the same job as a male is what pushes millions of women out of careers in science or law. Having to go through job interviews knowing that you may not get a job simply because of your gender is certainly a challenge that women
