Children of Homosexual Parents

Throughout history, it has been a struggle for those of the same sex to do many things. For example, showing affection with one another, getting married, and even having/adopting children into their family is difficult. Fortunately overtime, discrimination has become subdued by equality, and more people are commonly able to do things they once were punished for. Since it has become possible for homosexual couples to raise children, the outcome and dynamics of their families have been able to be observed more than ever before.

When raised by homosexuals, a child misses out on either a mother or father figure. Boys may find it difficult to relate to only mothers, and girls may find it difficult to relate or to confide in only fathers in a home. Overall, there has been more studies done on lesbian mothers and their kids compared to gay fathers. However, as time goes on, more data has been accumulated for two father houses, since with more freedom, more men are coming out as homosexual. In short, it had been found that these studies had lined up similarly with lesbian mothers raising children, although with one major difference; “Male couples are unable to provide children with the same kind of nurturing and caring available to children raised by mothers.” (Rutgers 2018). It is proven that mothers are usually the caretakers and one to go to for emotional support, and fathers are there for play. Of course, this can differ from parent to parent, and one partner may take on more of the mother role and one of a father role. Support for the view that this can damage a child psychosocially or behaviorally is extremely limited.

To conclude, a child’s emotional, behavioral, gender identity, or psychosocial adjustment is not found to be directly affected by the sexual orientation of their parents. What does impact this, however, is the style of parenting that is utilized in a family; this can vary among both heterosexual parents as well as homosexual parents, and it is necessary to remember that gay couples are just as human as straight couples are.
