The LGBT community has faced numerous disadvantages since the beginning of time. Until recently, gay marriage was illegal in the United States due to the idea that these kinds of relationships were unethical and negative for society. Because of this idea, gay and lesbian relationships have a negative stigma that comes with them. In our nation’s past, there was a time that LGBT people and relationships were unheard of, this has gradually changed over the course of time however it has been a long process. The older generation, particularly are to this day against homosexuality, these are the people that run our government and enforce our laws, so changing their mind took a long time. The legalization of gay marriage was a large step towards a more equal, liberal United States.
As stated, homosexuality has been looked down upon for years. When people started coming out as gay they were thought to have some sort of disorder, making them the way that they were. This quickly made people fear homosexuality and people who identified similarly. Like racism in media such as a black person playing the villain, the gay people also played the villains in movies. During this time films were changed so much that the whole purpose of the movie was completely changed. Books that were made into films that incorporate LGBT behavior were not allowed on screens or were forced to be changed to ensure that kind of inappropriate behavior was not shown. After 1952 this ruling was reversed and the media was once again given freedom of speech.
