What does it mean to be an adult? In today's society being an adult has become defined by your legal status your age. In the 1970's to be considered an adult your education had to be completed and one acquired a job that allowed them to financially stand on their own. As time progressed on the definition of being an adult continuously changes. I believe that the century you're in has a lot to do with society's definition of an adult. Being an adult in today' society is completely different than the 70's. I believe that your age, responsibilities, and your independence define if one is an adult. Being an adult in America today begins the day that you turn 18. The moment you turn 18 in America a lot of things change. It may not appear to be that way on your birthday but it does. This is the day you become a legal adult and no longer a minor under your parents consent. This is the first day that the rules begin to change because you are an adult. A minor is considered to be under the protection of their guardian. They are provided with food, clothing, and they are financially support by their parents or legal guardian. Under the age of 18 the rules in most states are different for adolescents. For instance if a child were to shoplift, or breaks someones window with a baseball the legal guardian is considered responsible for the childs action. …show more content…

One has to learn to provide for themselves they have to provide their own food, clothing, shelter , and other necessities they deem necessary. You are now allowed to purchase your own car, house, apartment, washer , dryer and etc.without the consent of your parents. All you need is your own money and your signature.
