Without working, people would not be able to live up to their potential. Since the industrialization era, many jobs were created and many jobs have become in danger of being taken over by the advancement of technology. For instance, since the invention of the cotton gin, by Eli Whitney, the extraction process of the cotton fibers from the seeds became a very quick process that increased profits, but it also took the jobs of people that did the process by hand. This may sound unrealistic to some, but it is the future of the world. The effects are starting to become visible to the world more so-ever than in the 1990s or early 2000s. Amazon, one of the biggest online retailers in the world, is planning to open a physical store in Seattle called Amazon Go, and a person can just walk in, grab whatever they want and walk out, the items will be charged to their amazon account. This is a very big step towards the future of shopping because the Amazon Go store does not have any cash registers or any employees, except maybe a couple to watch over the store. This is a step towards the future where humans will not be needed in retail positions, and many are in danger of losing their jobs. For example, in the U.S., 25% of the population is in retail, when automaton starts taking people’s jobs in retail, roughly 75,000,000 can be in danger of unemployment, if they cannot adapt to their fields of work. Retailing is just one of many work forces that will feel the monstrous power of technology. This dilemma is not only happening in the U.S. or west world countries, but worldwide. For futurists and economic theorist, the answer is “Basic income”, which is a wage you receive from the government just for being human. Basic income is a check paid to individual adults regardless of other sources of income. Governments around the world have already proposed it as a serious possibility. For example, Switzerland was the closest country in history passing a law for basic income. However, the Swiss Federal Counsel voted down the idea. The issue is now spreading to government representatives in Finland, and now American Activists and futurists are taking notice. Basic income is one of the solutions to this worldwide phenomenon, but the idea still has major complications. One of those major complications is that people will omit the value of hard work. Hard work is one of the principles of life, and if the people fail to recognize that, then life would not have a deeper ethical meaning. Although there are some benefits, and one of them is that basic income will give the low class a chance at decent living and provide a less misfortune life. This is very helpful to the people in need but there are always those who like to play a game according to their own rules, not the ones in place. In other words, some people may quit their jobs and take the basic income check and that can harm the American value of ‘Hard work pays
