Acts 20:35 says, “In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.” This is why I have a want to help others. It is such a blessing to help someone. I love seeing happiness in anothers eyes knowing it is because of something I said or did.
One endeavor that I’ve undertaken that utilized my college education to improve my community was tutoring and mentoring individuals in elementary, middle, and high school; some with and without learning disabilities, and some with and without troubled backgrounds. I spent two semesters of schooling sitting with individuals five to seventeen years old and seeing so that they were accomplishing their goals. It was a joy being a help and seeing the smiles on their faces as they realized someone noticed the good they were doing.

I had some that were quiet and shy, and some just so vibrant and happy. With each one, I had to find ways to make sure they were comfortable with me. They needed to feel loved by me, know that I cared, and was proud of them. My major in college, Social Work, reflects what led me to want to help these individuals. I love helping people and making them feel appreciated and good about themselves.
I, also, had the privilege of being able to go and be a volunteer at the Special Olympics here in Poplar Bluff, this past year. This was a time what I had learned came in use. I was able to be a guiding light to the children I was a helper for. Nothing warmed my heart more than seeing them get so excited when everyone cheered for them in their events. They showed me what true happiness
