There were several events that happened prior to the Civil War. Southerners were a little more aggressive and wanted war and Northerners tried to do as much as they could to avoid violence. Southerners were the first to fire shots at Fort Sumter and the firsts to invade Kansas and turn violent in the Kansas Nebraska Act that ultimately led to Bleeding Kansas. The Dred Scott V. Sanford supreme court case was a minor event that led to the secession of the South. Southerners got so enraged at Lincoln that they left the union and formed their own. The South were the aggressors of the war and some events that led to the Civil War was the Kansas Nebraska Act, the Dred Scott V. Sandford, and the Secession of the South. South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas all voted to leave the union. Some states decided to stay because they wanted to see what Lincoln would do. Lincoln felt mutual about slavery, he wanted to keep it in states that already had it, but didn’t want to open up any further states for slavery. He did do some things that made the South decide to secede. Lincoln refused to consider the Crittenden Compromise that would protect slavery in states where it existed. He gave a speech saying that he thought secession was illegal and he would assert federal authority in the South. He also reminded everyone in his speech that he would not abolish slavery but also not create more slave states and he would enforce the Fugitive Slave Act. This speech gave Northerners mixed feelings about Lincoln and definitely made Southerners very angry. They took what Lincoln said as a sign of war and they fired shots at Fort Sumter.
