Charles Fredrick Worth was also was the first designer to place labels on his clothing. He understood marketing and branding, and he used these concepts to attract a larger clientele. By placing his name on the outside of the clothes his clients could show off their style, wealth and class at social functions without having to verbally tell others she was wearing a Worth design. Aristide Boucicaut realized during the middle of the 19th century that a new consumer had emerged in Paris. So he created Le Bon Marché to serve the customers who wanted to browse for a variety of items in one place. “The birth of Le Bon Marché heralded a whole new culture of commerce that included fixed prices, lower margins, home delivery, item exchange, mail order, promotional periods and sales, private concerts, a reading area and much more.” Le Bon Marché was completely revolutionary for the retail industry. The store would order small quantities of goods in every single category to sell at low prices. However, during the 1960’s the fashion industry changed in a major way. After the Second World War in the United States, there was a surge of abundance of mass produced goods. In conjunction with more products, more people had disposable income to spend. While the United States was the leader for mass production and the start of consumerism, the concept quickly spread internationally to almost all industrialized countries. Consumerism and mass production changed the fashion industry forever. People no longer bought only bespoke products. Also, chain department stores, outlets, and supermarkets replaced small locally owned businesses. Mass production allowed for styles to change more frequently than previous years. Factories can quickly switch production lines making a wide assortment. The wider assortment gave consumers more choices and these new choices more often. Since people had more disposable income they could purchase more items. Mass production led to cheaper costs for the businesses, which were in turn passed onto consumers. The idea of being able to buy and needing to buy products quickly caught on the society.
