Slavery was abolished in 1865, and yet it is among one of the world’s greatest issues. Is there enough being done that sheds a light on human trafficking? Human trafficking, or modern-day slavery, has always been prevalent since hundreds of years ago. Abolishing slavery did not eradicate the issue; it only made people sweep it under the rug. One of the many things that can make a person susceptible to trafficking is their financial situation. Victims of trafficking might come from any socioeconomic class, but the lack of resources, especially employment prospects, is intrinsically tied to the crime. When people desperately try to escape poverty, they may fall victim to deceptive job practices or sex trafficking. Human traffickers focus on the poor and those who are otherwise unable to provide for even their necessities. Over a third of the world's population, or 2.5 billion people, are at risk for human trafficking since they earn less than $2.00 per day (Cook et al., 2022).
There are an estimated twenty- seven million adults and thirteen million children who are involved with sex trafficking and roughly two thousand five hundred trafficking victims are believed to still be drifting at sea. Victims are usually beaten, ill treated, drugged, raped and prostituted, but nothing is being done. In the Sex trafficking industry females make up fifty- five percent, males make up forty- five percent, and of those percentages children make up fifty percent. Roughly estimated one point two million children are trafficked every year. When a child or new victim is just starting the traffickers often train the girls themselves by, raping them and teaching them sex acts.
Department of States an estimated 20.9 million men, women and children are trafficked for commercial sex or forced labor around the world. Even thought the United States provides programs to help victims of human trafficking, the victims are not familiar with these programs. It often takes them about a year or more to receive help because they are uneducated. The United States has the goal to achieve global awareness of human trafficking, but it is a difficult task. For example countries like Algeria denied sex trafficking despite evidence.
In the United States, human trafficking has taken on different forms than what is normally thought of as human trafficking. It can range from a migrant laborer wanting to get a job to be able to support his family to survive who is then forced into manipulative work to a child running away to get away from abuse that is happening at home and the person that is helping the child get away from the abusive situation at home turns out to be exploiting him or her to make a profit (Farrell et al, 2014). According the International Labour Organization has estimated that 20.9 million people are involved in human trafficking in the whole world, with 1.5 million victims are in the United States, Canada, and Western Europe. In 2011, there were 3,969 convictions worldwide, and there were only 151 convictions in the United States.
Many of the victims are forced with violence or indirectly with psychological blackmail into the sex trade. Human trafficking is the worst form of abuse that can be inflicted on an individual. A trafficked human being suffers from mental, and physical abuse, leaving them with lifelong mental illnesses. Many women dream of a better life and are willing to travel across the globe to better their lives.
THE IMPACT OF TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS Human trafficking today is a global phenomenon, affecting men, women and children in over 130 countries of the world. Trafficking is a crime against individuals. As such, the consequences are most directly felt by trafficked persons. As well documented, trafficking activities contravene fundamental human rights, denying people basic and broadly accepted individual freedoms. Trafficking also has broad economic, social and cultural consequences.

Out of the 24.9 million the demographics showed around 70% of women and girls were victims of trafficking and 30% of men and boys were victims of trafficking, with 75% being over the age of 18 and 25% being under the age of 18. Within the United States there are approximately 600-800,00 victims of trafficking according to the US State Department, with Asia-pacific region accounting for the largest amount of victims internationally.
Human trafficking, or trafficking in persons (TIP) or modern day slavery, is a heinous and widespread crime occurring around the world in nearly every society. Most people often thought slavery was part of the past; however, human slavery is part of our current society and has been an on-going issue around the world.
