The father eventually caves in and goes to the play. Neil does amazing, but his father doesn't see it. They bring him home later that night. Then, Due to a disturbing talk in the family room Neil kills himself. This shows the transcendental trait of Human potential because he worked hard and sadly he couldn’t do what he was good at because his parents thought it was a distraction.
When Mr. Perry tells Neil that he is making him quit being the editor of the yearbook he says, “After you've finished medical school and you're on your own, then you can do as you damn well please. But until then, you do as I tell you. Is that clear?” Neil has a constant feeling of distress due to him trying to please his father, and to do well in school. Luckily, Neil is at the top of his class, but he wants to do more, especially with his acting.
Throughout the entire movie one of the main characters Neil Perry is seen trying to embrace his decisions against his father 's which makes them fight very often making Neil want to become a nonconformist to not only his father but against society. Neil’s father always
Much to his demise things don’t always turn out the way one hope or plans. In the movie Parenthood (1989), Gil says his a shitty father because his son ,Kevin, is in therapy, his daughter, Taylor, was caught kissing all the boys in school and his lastborn, Justin, keeps ramming things with his head. He blames himself because he believes that his lack of presence and choice of parenting style is the reason why his kids are having problems. Even though Gil had worked at his job for so many years and hoped to have less hours in order to spend more time with his family, he still put in the extra effort in order to get the partnership at his job. In the movie Parenthood (1989), Gil’s career suffered a setback when he was passed over for a partnership which was given to a less experienced employee that brought in multimillion-dollar clients.
He says that Neil should not be distracted by extra-mural activities, such as writing for the school's newspaper or acting, but rather focus on his academics so that he can "go to Harvard and become a doctor". After Mr Keating's classes inspire Neil to be an unique individual and take control over the life he owns, Neil furtively pursues his passion for acting behind his father's back. Although under firm instructions from Mr Perry that he is not to act in the Midsummer Night's Dream play, Neil takes Mr Keating's advice and ignores his father's orders. This in turn, makes Mr Perry extremely angry and he punishes Neil by pulling him out of Welton and placing him in a military school, to regain focus. Neil cannot come to terms with this horrible news and comes to the conclusion that the only way to take control of his life, is to end his own life.
Neil’s father, Mr. Perry was responsible for his son’s suicide. “Neil couldn’t deal with the idea that to give up acting was to quit playing the roles that he lived every day, and so he killed himself because he “realized that he had not lived” up to that point” (See). Neil was not an honest person to himself or his father. Neil’s father wants the best for him and is able to give him the best education. “You have opportunities that I never even dreamt of and I am not going to let you waste them” (Schulman).
He comes from a very wealthy family. Neil’s dad wants Neil to become a doctor. Neil has different plans; he loves to act and what to be an actor. Neil’s dad is overbearing and tells Neil he will have nothing to do with acting. This back and forth disagreement makes Neil’s commit suicide.
