Nintendo is one of three oligopolies in the video game industry. Nintendo has a rich history dating back to 1889 when the company only made Japanese playing cards called Hanafuda Cards (Jones, 2013). Since then, Nintendo has developed well-received hardware and software catered to the video game industry. For example, the Nintendo Wii (hardware) and Super Mario (software). A SWOT analysis revealed that Nintendo has strengths/advantages in product innovation, user-friendly products, brand recognition and being the only oligopoly to be solely dedicated to the video game industry.
