Paper Three: Reading 12: Pliny the Younger In A.D 100 Pliny the Younger wrote a speech due to his new role of consulship to the Emperor at the time Trajan. In this very long speech he spoke very highly of Trajan and poorly of the emperor’s before him. Assuming he wanted more support from higher-up’s as he was consul now and speaking poorly of an emperor or even mentioning some of his faults would quite possibly be a terrible idea. Today we will be exploring Pliny’s speech on how it made Trajan look like a humble man and a God, strengths of the source, weaknesses of the source, and how credible the source is. Pliny the Younger made Trajan seem like the perfect Emperor. In a previous source that I wrote about earlier with Augustus and how he writes about his accomplishments. This time it is another man writing about what’s so great about Trajan. Pliny has a list’s of all the compliments he has in his box for Trajan. We see how one in power handles a speech around a Roman Emperor this “magnificent.” Pliny being the consul he is shines in his compliments to Trajan, which he assumed helped gain support from him as well. It shows what an elite member of society did to get the support of just an emperor throughout the empire. Even if Pliny painted Trajan as not being feared due to his humble nature it makes you think he was afraid that he would be shunned or even so far as killed by the emperor if he actually said so much so as to a little bit of what he was doing incorrectly.
