Poverty as defined in “What is Poverty” is someone who does not have enough money for the necessities, none for luxuries or pleasure. Poverty in all has a complex meaning that can affect people in many different ways. People in poverty do not have the ability to meet their basic needs. Not only does poverty affect the person in such state, but the society in which one lives. Income inequality, lack of education, substance abuse, single parent household and much more are a few of the many reasons for poverty in today's society. Understanding the complexity of poverty that create conditions like such cannot be caused by one single factor and cannot go away with the blink of an eye.
First, Income inequality is the greatest cause of higher poverty rate in America. Income inequality can be defined as the unequal distribution of household or individual across the economy. Being raised in a single-mother-headed household caused me to increase in higher educational goals. As a child I remember wanting a pair of jordans, but my mom expressed to me that she had bigger things to worry bout than some shoes. Seeing this as a young chilled instilled in me that when i want better not only for me but for my children as well.

Nyerere states “ Education is not a way to escape poverty, It is a way to fight it”. To a certain extent getting an education is what one makes it. Though if one in poverty is not given the correct tools in order to succeed poverty will never be escaped. Often times children who grow up poor are more likely to dropout of school or only Receive a high school diploma.
