Ciara Campos Professor Shamiryan English 096 November 9, 2015 Modifying into Cultures Everybody has a different definition of success. Success can be interpreted into having happiness, having knowledge, and being financially stabled. Most people describe it as being patient and having a positive mindset. Malcolm Gladwell, author of Outliers, demonstrated how without the knowledge of other cultures, there are many things that people won’t consider questioning or realizing about it. He also showed how people need to adapt to a new culture in order to achieve success since it affects how society deals with culturism today.
Both the “Social Gospel” and “The Gospel of Wealth” believed that there is a problem in society. The main difference between the two books is their completely opposing ideology. The Social Gospel believed it was the rich men who oppressed the poor in society. On the other hand the Gospel of Wealth believed that it was the rich who were the solution to fight poverty because they would ideally give back to the community and help the people in poverty.
To start, John D. Rockefeller, one of the richest capitalists in history, used the term Social Darwinism to say why some people were poor and some were rich. This ideal is exemplified in Ghent ’s Our Benevolent Feudalism, (Doc. 7), which explains why the principle of “Survival of the fittest” applies to laissez-faire capitalism. Essentially, it said that if someone was not successful, it was a result of not working hard enough.
When you think of success what comes to mind? In sports it’s making it to the pros. In business it’s making your first million. In high school it can be as simple as acing that test you studied for all night. No matter what profession you are in, success is the desired goal.
Social Gospel was a Protestant Christian movement in the 19th and 20th centuries. In Social Darwinism, a person’s wealth, social status, and property showed their fitness. Poor people were considered lazy and fell under wealthy people and were seen as weak, or not fit to survive. Social Gospel covered excess urbanization and industrialization. Christian people helped workers and poor people and favored them over wealthy people.
success is not on your own terms, if it looks good to the world but does not feel good in your heart, it is not success at all.” ― Anna Quindlen. Success is something everyone has, to be successful in life, school, or any other thing. I want to be successful in school.
After reading several articles and verses I can see where you can cross the worldview and secular view of wellness. At face value the words that make up the definition seem to mean the same thing. The real difference is how wellness is achieved. Secular wellness is achieved through actions that are dependent on you. How you take care of yourself for example, exercise, diet and lifestyle.
Carnegie, Conwell, and Alger Advocates of Wealth for All During the late nineteenth century, a form of Social Darwinism emerged called the Gospel of Wealth also known as the Success Gospel. Social Darwinism is “Herbert Spencer’s adaptation of Charles Darwin’s concepts of natural selection and “survival of the fittest” as it applies to human society” (Nash p. 417). Social Darwinists believed that the social order was the product of the natural selection of the individuals that were best suited for the existing living conditions. These individuals were white, Anglo-Saxon, wealthy men.
There are many definitions of success among the general public. To most people, it means having a good life, a good family, and lots of money. Although the definition might vary, all success involves one important element hard work. The value and importance of hard work has been proven over and over again in numerous history and literature.
Think of success like watching a tree grow the branches split into different paths one can take each split is another opportunity to prosper and grow beautiful leaves like trophies. An uncommon belief is that the process of becoming successful is like a tree branch, if one starts off strong, more paths appear growing from the sturdy branch, and achieving goals lead to leaves growing to show wealth. “It is those who are successful, in other words, who are most likely to be given the kinds of special opportunities that lead to further success,” (Gladwell 30). Author of nonfiction book Outliers: The Story of Success, Malcolm Gladwell, agrees with this uncommon belief, in his book he argues that success does not come from intelligence or passion
Social Darwinism and the Social Gospel Movement are contrasting systems of belief. Social Darwinism suggests that people are in the social or financial state that they deserve. This appealed to the work ethic that anyone could do well if they worked hard enough. For some, this was a source of inspiration to work hard to excel.
In our world, people usually associate success with either money, money, or money. Success shouldn’t be about how much money we earn, how good our job is, or how famous we are. It should be about our own personal goals and aims in life. I think everyone’s definition of success is different. For each individual, success is something that makes them feel proud.
Throughout America's short history the influences of Darwinism have been present whether through the segregation of others, through social Darwinism, and a long struggle between religion and evolution. Darwinism has had a long history in the United States and throughout the world of being used for the segregation of people. Immigrants could not fully prepare for the world that Social Darwinism and Eugenics had created within the states. The same way that Darwin's theory has found an abundance of supporters, it has also found a large amount of people who oppose the theory or feel threatened by it. There are many ways that Darwinism has been used to make other feel inferior to others.
Success is found in all goals that are accomplished no matter how small or large that they are. Being successful doesn 't always mean that one must accomplish goals that are hard. To others it could be marrying the person they love. To be happy with that person for the rest of their life is a big success. Being successful at an educational standpoint would be graduating college with a degree in a future career.
Success is by not having good grades because of your education. If you don’t have good grades you won’t get a high school diploma and without a high school diploma you can’t provide very well for yourself. Examples like you can’t get a good place to live, but you would have to live in a small space like an apartment or a hotel. If you can a get a good job that pays then you will be maybe ok in your living situation, but if you don’t get a good job you need to go back to high school and get that diploma.
