In the article "Life Isn't Fair - Deal With It", the author, Mike Myatt, claims that "life is not fair, nor do I believe we should attempt to socially or financially engineer it to be such" (Myatt 2011). He supports this claim in the article by using a plethora of persuasive techniques and real-life examples. Using ethos and logos to convince the reader of his point has a strong effect on this opinion piece; by being logical and credible, he creates an environment of an authority figure, making it seem that the author knows more than you; therefore, trusting them comes naturally. For example, when the author is talking about "The following 11 points came from a commencement speech widely attributed to Bill Gates entitled Rules for Life" (Myatt 2011), one becomes convinced that the author knows what he is talking about; by using Bill Gates, a famous entrepreneur, and billionaire, as an example to prove his point valid, Myatt creates trust and reliability, establishing ethos.
It is stated that Ethos "means to convince an audience of the author's credibility or character. " In the first video about “Claudette Colvin and Rosa Parks," you see Ethos is being presented we see this woman who is speaking of a story in History from her perspective. From what we have come to learn in today's times, we know that what she is stating is not true. But as listeners, we are drawn in because she speaks with such confidence as to what she believes to be true. Ethos, by definition, is the action that tries to convince the reader or audience that the author of the piece is credible. In the proposal by, Stephan Reynolds, his writing piece revealed his experience and expertise within his field as within his introduction he incorporated citations that would back his statement that Kepler’s supernova happened due to a Type la event. Starting in the introduction the first clue to Reynolds credibility is his usage of citations to back up his claim, as he states that the supernova trace was due to “interaction with dense circumstellar medium, which could arise from a core-collapse event.” (Reynolds 1). Zakaria’s novel defends the liberal arts by explaining how this degree creates critical thinkers. Students develop critical thoughts by learning how to write and formulate their own opinions. Ethos is a person’s credibility. I used this in a somewhat reversed manner. The government is an organization that many trust. I included a quote about the government owning up to its acts and ending the law that allowed the NSA to collect phone records from companies. The intended affect of this quote was to show that the government, which we all trust has actually taken and analyzed our phone records.

Ethos, pathos, and logos are the three argumentative appeals. During my years in college, I have been required to write an argumentative paper. Before starting my paper, I had to decide which argumentative appeal I would use. I always ended up using logos, and that’s why I believe that logos are the most useful appeal for an academic argument. Logos are sometimes referred to as logical appeals.
The definition of ethos is the underlying sentiment that informs the beliefs, customs, or practices of a group or society. A way he uses the customs or practices is by following four rules he was given. He can only supersize if he is asked. He can only eat food that is from McDonald’s.

Aside from ethos there is pathos. Pathos is the passion in a speech or writing.
Ethos means convincing by the author. We tend to believe people whom we respect and look up to as role models. Persuading someone with their role model to buy the product. It like a endorsement deal with celebrity. Nike uses the most ethos to draw the age groups together to sell the product by signing endorsement deals with athletes.
