Journal #4 I am reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and I am on page 304. This book is about a girl named Scout that lives with her brother Jem, her friend Dill, her father Atticus, and her housekeeper Calpurnia. She has many adventures with the boys and learned many great lessons from Atticus. In particular, there is the case of Tom Robinson in which Atticus defends him. The kids observe the trial in the balcony with the colored people.
Being Brave To Kill A Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, is a tale of two children, Jem and Scout. This powerfully inspiring and educational story entails daily life of the children, as well as the struggles they faced while their father is defending a black man’s case during a racially segregated time period. As an author, Harper Lee developed multiple themes throughout this story. These themes include good, evil, justice, fear, family, forgiveness, and compassion.
To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee tells a story of how a trail can have an impact on families. Through the book, Harper Lee shows a lot of symbolism using the mockingbird. The mockingbird is used to show the innocence of some of the characters. Atticus is shown as a Mockingbird for helping Tom Robinson in the trial where is convicted of raping Mayella Ewell when he did not. Tom Robinson is seen as a mockingbird because he is innocent in the trial.
Many people say that seeing is believing, but that simply is not true, well at least not according to the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. The book constantly contradicts the idea that seeing is believing. Several different characters go against what is believed and observed about them, which in turn surprises other characters. To start off, one of the biggest characters that contradicts what is believed about them is Atticus. He is seen as this polite, simple man, but when a mad dog is spotted in his neighbourhood he is quick to take a rifle and shoot the dog.

She emphasizes Tom Robinson’s case, and how her and her community members were affected by it.
To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, was published in 1960. This novel is a realistic fiction book about a family who lives in Alabama during the Great Depression. This book has a real life plot centered around prejudice ideas that are very relatable to people who lived during the Great Depression era. Prejudice causes many social injustice issues in the novel. Many of them are based on the segregation of whites and blacks in the south during the Great Depression era.
Explaining to Jem and Scout that the mockingbird only sings its heart out for us. This also goes into the court case that Atticus is working on. Tom Robinson is convicted of rape when it is proven that he did nothing and it was Bob Ewell that gave Mayella Ewell, his own daughter all the injuries. Tom Robinson was later sentenced guilty and only because of the racism in the town, which is completely unfair in society and the only one that really seems to recognize it is Atticus.
To Kill a Mockingbird is not only a worthwhile read because of the gripping plot, but it’s also worth reading due to the encrypted life lessons the novel promotes. These values that the novel describes are important to life, and provide new perspectives on the world. Harper Lee introduces the values actions have consequences, people aren’t always how they seem, and to finally, protect the innocent in the coming of age story that is To Kill a Mockingbird. Lee does this by elaborating on different occasions where characters are perceived a negative way, perceived as guilty, and sheltering the innocence of some. Harper Lee introduces the life lesson that actions have consequences throughout multiple events in To Kill a Mockingbird.
TKAM In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird there are many forms of symbolism. Some may be the dog that was white,brown and black that was shot and killed by Atticus because it had rabies. This showed that there was racism and he was trying to kill it like in the case he supported a black man even though there was no chance he would win since the man was black. There were many symbols like that that stood out, but once you dig a little deeper you will find many that still contribute to the story in a huge way.
The title of the book is To Kill a Mockingbird. The reason it’s called To Kill a Mockingbird is because Atticus says “It’s a sin to kill a Mockingbird”. A Mockingbird is best described as a bird that doesn’t hurt anyone, does not attempt to hurt anyone, sings for enjoyment, tires to help, and has nothing but innocence. There are many “Mockingbirds” in the book To Kill a Mockingbird. The two characters that really stood out to me as the Mockingbirds were Atticus Finch and Calpurnia.

He talked about how powerful of a tool symbolism is and how it is the only thing that can truly define a highly complex ‘destiny’ or series of events. Symbolism is something that is found throughout Harper Lee’s book, To Kill a Mockingbird. Lee shows the reader that racism is a product of society,she portrays the matter through her symbolism of the mad dog, the birds and the bugs.
This explains that God had made everyone equal and that no one should look down on others just because of their skin. That they should look deeper into the people and understand their character. Harper Lee tried to convey this message to the people of her time, and in the end, succeeded in doing so. To Kill a Mockingbird in many ways show just how wrong judging a person by their outside and that they should strive to change this to others around
To Kill a Mockingbird is a book mainly about the coexistence of good and evil. The book stresses and emphasizes on the exploration of moral nature in humans. There are many themes in this novel including courage, innocence, racism, femininity, etc. However the most prevalent theme in the book is innocence. Not just innocence in itself but the danger and harm evil poses to the innocent.
Through To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee teaches us the righteousness of empathy. Harper Lee 's technique of writing and coinciding Christian beliefs weaved through emphasizes the importance of the story 's moral and themes. It is through Scout, the young dynamic and protagonist, that Lee opens the reader 's eyes to a realistic world of prejudice and inequality during the 1930s. Though introducing many characters throughout the novel, it is through Lee 's wise father character, Atticus Finch, that she further helps teach her readers life lessons, one being empathy. While narrating in first person, Lee further details her novel with the setting and use of style and diction.
