Proposition 54, the Public Display of Legislative Bills Initiative, would 1) prohibit California legislators from passing any bill without posting the bill for the public 72 hours beforehand, 2) require that videos of all the state’s public legislative meetings be posted online for twenty years, and 3) allow anyone to record videos of meetings and use them for “any legitimate purpose.” While proponents argue that this initiative is necessary to increase transparency, you should follow the Democratic Party in opposing it because it would unnecessarily slow down the legislative process, discourage bipartisan compromises, and enable misuse of videos in misleading ads. Furthermore, if Proposition 54 fails, you should offer an alternative piece

Proposition 62 wants to overturn the death penalty and turn it into life imprisonment. Meanwhile, Proposition 66 wants to shorten the death penalty time. The death penalty time should be shortened and not turned into life imprisonment in order to replace it. Life imprisonment would place the criminals in prison for as along as they live. Coincidentally, this would overcrowd the prisons even more.
In the 1950, President Harry S. Truman signed the NSC 68, which called for the increase in defense spending, causing it to nearly triple between 1950 and 1953. The NSC 68 outlined United States’ foreign policy after seeing the spreading influence of the Soviet Union after World War II. At the time, the Soviet Union was introducing communism to governments of other countries in hopes of gaining potential allies in the future. The United States, seeing this as an act against liberty and democracy, wanted to stop the spread communism, leading to a new US policy that lasts throughout the Cold War- Containment. Recently, in October 2001, President George Bush signed the US Patriot Act in response to the act of terrorism in September 11, 2001.
Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) allows the United States government to gather foreign intelligence information concerning persons located outside of the country that are, or are connected to, a potential threat against the nation. In addition to protecting national security, the communications data collected under Section 702 has been used for criminal prosecution in domestic court cases. Since it passed in 2008, scholars have raised questions over the act’s constitutionality, especially about its consistence with the Fourth Amendment which protects both US and non-US persons against unreasonable searches and seizures. These scholars argue that not all communications gathered under Section 702 meet the reasonableness requirement of the Fourth Amendment and should therefore not be used in criminal cases. However, Section 702 mainly conflicts with the Constitution only when the act is used inappropriately by agencies to investigate people residing within the US rather than for its intended purpose of gathering foreign intelligence.

The primary aim of SB1146, currently, applies to colleges who receive state or federal funding; the bill desires to prevent these colleges from enforcing codes of student conduct that reflect the school’s beliefs about sexuality identity and confining marriage to male/female relationships. The final draft of this bill asserts that if any school declares that they are exempt from this bill, full disclosure must be made to faculty and staff and must be posted and written in various forms of media, as well as given to prospective students. Title IX, the precursor to this bill, states that a person may not be denied from any educational program or activity that receives financial aid due to their sexual identity. Title VII is applied to the workforce, and prohibits employers from discriminating against employees based on race, religion, origin, and sex. Both Title IX and VII were created to help prevent discrimination based on gender identity, among other things, by holding schools and employers accountable for their actions towards these people groups that may be more easily disrespected.

When examining racial identity in America, it can be said that it has become institutionalized. It shows up in our everyday life, appearing in both the sociopolitical and economic spheres of life. America has demonstrated an obsession with categorizing people on the basis of their race, and has imposed these ideas on immigrants who come to live in this country. Many immigrants, especially from Latin America, have different notions of race, and may not share the same ideas as Americans. Their opinions may vary because of many factors, such as familial or societal influence.
