How does our generation define what it means to be an American?
For our generation, most of us believe being American means hope and freedom. We all believe people can make their own choices and live freely. People had the freedom to choose their occupation and what they want to do with their life. Our generation agrees that people come here to start lives and to live successful, happy lives. Many believe that the United States gives us the right to better our own and other people lives. The United States gives us our right to schooling to make us smarter. When there are natural disasters, it usually makes all of the people come together. In “The Quilt of a Country” by Anna Quindlen, She said, “These are the representatives of a mongrel nation that somehow, at times like this, has one spirit.” She said this after the Twin Towers were crashed into, about the people uniting after a horrible disaster. Natural disasters can cause a lot of damage and that is when all of the people came together. When people are in need, everyone comes together to give everyone hope that everything will be okay after the disaster. People feel the need to help people when other people are in need. In House Springs in Spring 2017, there was a flood. It had 10 inches of rain, and it led to flooding everywhere. Many people lost houses and vehicles so everyone came together to help. Then, Hundreds of people sandbagged places and helped people evacuate. This shows connection to how our generation defines what it means to be American. When other people are in trouble, you can always have hope because other people will stay strong when problems arise. It shows that we define what it means to be American by uniting as one in times of
