Womens fashion has drastically changed over the course of 100 years. Fashion was affected by social standings, evolution, and modern change. For clothing businesses they have to stay on top of what the next big thing is. The fashion industry is competitive, everyone trying to promote their designs and new ideas trying to get it hooked with what's trending. At the same time women did not have a lot of freedom in the 1920’s so they had very little to work with while upholding the standards for women back then. Women stopped wearing as much jewelry and the new norm was the idea of a minimalistic look. Simplicity was a driving factor into womens fashion because of the war. This also meant taking away the idea of formality and the layers of fabric, which was in some ways good because that also brought back comfort and a more natural look to the womens body. The next big thing was a tubular look, had dropped waistlines, raised hemlines, and was made from economical fabrics. Coco Chanel made a big impact on this fashion style and it popularized quickly. Women fashion grew more to look like suits, women used ties, high waisted trousers, hats, and some androgyny. The feminine parts were jewelry like pearls and makeup. Many different styles were popularized, some being romantic, feminine, long skirts while others were like sportswear and less formal. All competing for the next big thing, because that was a running factor in the fashion industry it also forced the designers to think outside the box. Having to create something totally different and unique while staying inside what was appropriate in the day. However the more designs that came out the more crazy and outside the box fashion was. Because of those few designers pushing the limit to womens fashion it eventually got us to where we are now. The primary sources were newspapers promoting new clothes for both women and men. In the newspaper it would highlight the cost, the designers, colors, new trends, etc. many of them mention the word “individuality” and relates it towards a piece of clothing. Womens individuality starts to come up in the 1920’s because of the 19th amendment and one of the ways women are getting that is through how they dress. Clothing started to be a way for women to express more about who she is and her personal taste. The fashion trends I found in the primary sources were spring suits, blouses, hats, spring frocks of silk, and colorful dresses.
