The Enlightenment Period consisted of philosophers that advocated for political, social, and economic changes. The enlightenment thinkers motivated the revolutions of the 18 and 19th century by promoting Equal rights of Man and by preaching that governments should be managed by branches instead of a monarch. One of the most influential revolutions was the American revolution whereas the American colonists were fed up with the British and declared independence from them.
The Enlightenment brought many new ideas to the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries and lead to changes in society. The people of this time started to question everything that was in their lives and they looked to the philosophers. Many scientists began to discover new things and they learned about how things really worked. The people started to focus more on secular ideas and not spiritual ideas. Mostly everyone started thinking about why they wanted and focusing more on making the world better.
The Enlightenment was created in France in the 1700’s. It was a movement in Europe that was about applying reason to all aspects of life. During this movement, Philosophers used five concepts that they built upon to create the Enlightenment; reason, nature, happiness, progress, and an envy for England's glorious revolution and their bill of rights. The Enlightenment was a European movement that sparked and challenged new ideas about the relationship of common people to their governments. Over a period of time Enlightenment ideas spread outside of Europe and created a change of governments around the globe.
Part One: The Enlightenment was an influential time filled with new ideas and change. During this time, there was a shift in thought with how the government should act and with the religion of the people. These changes occurred because of inspiration from the Scientific revolution and past conflicts, like war, and made people want to stand up and adjust society. None of these innovations would have been made without the philosophers.
The Enlightenment was a period between the 17th and 18th century in which philosophers attempted to discover new ways to improve and understand their society. There were four Enlightenment philosophers, John Locke, Voltaire, Adam Smith, and Mary Wollstonecraft. The Enlightenment philosophers believed that individual freedom could improve our society in several areas. These areas included natural rights, freedom of religion, and social equality/ equal learning. First, is the idea that people have the power to create and change the government and that everyone has natural rights or rights that belong to all humans from birth.
The Enlightenment was a revolution of ideas that changed perspectives and inspired people throughout the world to revolt against despotic forms of government. Some key ideas of the Enlightenment were equality, liberty, consent of the governed and freedom of thought. Enlightenment thinkers developed ambitious goals for humanity, but putting their ideas into practice was challenging within the framework of the societies in which they lived. This is why their ideas ignited revolutions. Colonial revolts based on Enlightenment ideas shook America in 1776 and Haiti in 1791.
Enlightenment was a concept that inspired a new way of thinking of the people. In the newly formed United States of America, enlightenment shaped the way the new government was run. Scientific reasoning was applied to politics, religion, and science. Enlightenment saved music, art, and literature programs in colleges. Enlightenment in Europe led to drastically altered views on philosophy, politics, and communications.
The Enlightenment in Europe was also known as the Age of Reason. It was a philosophical movement that was based on reason, liberty, and science rather than superstitions and faith. It allowed new thoughts and ideas to prosper among the people, and changed the way they lived their lives. The Age of Reason led to revolution because the Enlightenment writers expressed their ideas on human rights and problems that went on socially, economically, and politically. These ideas prospered throughout the people which changed the way they think and live their daily lives.
In the 1700’s, economic life and social life in America began to expand which gave people the time and urge to partake in intellectual and cultural quest. This allowed Americans to participate in a huge transition that affected a large portion of the Western part of America. They were moving toward the Enlightenment period and away from medieval. “This was important for American history because Enlightenment ideals played a substantial role in the American Revolution and in the development of the American political system that was to come” (Shultz, 2014, p. 69).
The Enlightenment gave people the chance to question and to search for the truth, instead of being told to accept and believe others beliefs and ideologies.
The Enlightenment began with the English philosopher John Locke. It was an era of spreading faith in reason, in reason, and in universal rights and laws (The Enlightenment in Europe). The ideas that were embodied by Enlightenment were life, liberty, and property. It also led to the idea of natural right. The Enlightenment influenced the way people finally realized that divine right wasn’t right and start to doubt it.

Many philosophers published works criticizing a country’s monarch or divulging the flaws they saw in a system within the government, such as the justice system. The Enlightenment also stressed the importance of education, and as a result of this, literacy rates experienced a major upward trend. Now able to read the philosopher’s works, a larger sum of people now were educated on the corruptions within their government. This caused a questioning of traditional practices, and people began to believe they could revise their government.

The Enlightenment beliefs that aided to the creation of the American government were separation of powers, checks and balances, and limited government. As stated before, without the Enlightenment there would not have been a revolution, resulting in no American Government. The Enlightenment’s influence on the creation of America is irrefutable.
