Becket got killed by the knights all because of an misunderstanding of the king’s quote. ‘Would no one rid me out of this troublesome priest!’ The knights without questioning thought that the king wanted to kill Becket, so they went to the Cathedral. But since Becket didn’t lock the door, run away or fight back, so that was the end of Thomas Becket.
Background of Becket and Henry
Henry and Becket were originally good and loyal friends with each other. They went fishing, hunting and horse riding together. BUT it has been found out that King Henry II wanted Becket to be Archbishop of Canterbury to change the rule of King’s court. Henry thought it was unfair because the King’s court had harsher punishments than the church court. But unfortunately to Henry it didn’t work the church stayed the same. This was because Becket became very religious after being the Archbishop of Canterbury. He knew he couldn’t serve two masters, so he decided only to serve the church. Becket at first shouldn’t have got Henry mad and angry. Also, Becket knew what was going to happen, but still he didn’t run away, lock the doors and he even let the knights to get him. King Henry should also take the blame because he said ‘Would no one rid me of this troublesome priest!’ which has two meanings. This either meant to kill that person or he was just expressing his anger with that person. He should have better control with his temper. Also at the very first Henry shouldn’t have forced Becket to be the Archbishop of Canterbury when he knew he didn’t want to be it. The knight should be blamed too because they shouldn’t have been nosey. They overheard the sentence and thought that King Henry II wanted Becket to be killed and so that was the end of Becket’s
