Suppose that you are an Arab merchant living in the early 7th century. You have just traveled to Makkah and Madinah for business, and have met Muhammad and his followers. In life there are few leaders and many followers. Leaders will heavily influence their followers as well as their opposers. In times of crisis, citizens will look upon their leaders for guidance. They trust that the leader will construct an efficient solution, and that the solution benefits everyone. Truly good leaders will sway their followers towards a noble intention, an intention that will contribute to the common good.
“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way,” as said by John C. Maxwell. This reminds people about what it takes to be a great leader and has raised many controversies as to what a great leader is. Qualities like decisiveness, confidence, focus, and consistency are necessary to make a leader. Virtue, which is a behavior showing high moral standards , is not one of the necessary qualities. By analyzing literature and history, a person can still be a good and effective leader without virtue because they are consistent, credible, and have a vision of their goals.
One of the many qualities that a leader must possess is that they are selfless. A true leader will not put himself/herself above everyone else, they will simply guide the society into the right path. There is an excellent example of this trait in the novel, Lord of the Flies. “There’s no man with a trumpet. Only me.”

The Great Depression is viewed as one of the most notable economic crashes in the history of the United States, and due to the United States’ global influence, the Great Depression is studied by economists in all corners of the world. Between 1929 and 1939, the Great Depression held its grip the tightest on every US citizen, regardless of race, gender, or economic standing. The lower class increased its size dramatically as middle-class citizen lost most of their income, and the upper-class citizens suffered losses in their stock. Every person experienced a dwindling of their personal savings as banks failed across the country, workplaces went bankrupt, and farmlands diminished. To become a successful leader, one must possess beneficial qualities, such as courage, selflessness, and confidence. There was a split in Islam because the Sunni and Shia believed differently on who Muhammad’s successor was. The Sunni believed that Muhammad’s successor was Abu Bakr, which is the father in law of Muhammad. But the Shia believed that Ali ibn Abi Talib was Muhammad’s successor, which was his soninlaw. This caused a debate between the Sunni and Shia and later on caused the split in Islam.
Wherever human beings are accumulated together in large numbers, they need leadership. Even a school needs a principle to mentor and escalate the school’s rank. Armies need generals to lead them to a courageous victory. Civilians need governments, captains of industry and intellectual leaders of thought as well. For instance, a leader must be passionate about the role they play in order to inspire others to join them. They must be able to communicate their thought process in order for outsiders to fully apprehend their vision. Leaders must be committed to carry through their ideas. They must be able to build a solid group foundation in order for them to succeed in the long run. Leaders should be decisive which requires a lot of confidence in themselves and their idea.

To be successful, a leader must be capable of fitting in and adapting to a plethora of different groups and situations while never losing vision of the objectives and purpose of their appointment. Successful world leaders like President Donald Trump who exudes great leadership qualities such as decision making, goal setting, confidence, labour of love and judge of character would be constant source of inspiration for aspiring leaders like the Writer [me] to be more like him. What is more, a leader is someone the followers look up to as role models and so they would be expecting a lot from her/him as a leader. I would be meeting such expectations as fairness, integrity, confidence, communication, respectfulness etc.
