In her essay “What’s So Bad About Instant Gratification,” Alexandra Samuel argued in this bold new world of instant gratification, we never have to wait for anything. But experts caution that all the instant gratification is causing a negative effect in our lives thus eroding our human core virtue. In this consumer-driven society, where instant gratification is valuable but it can lead to impulse behavior that may not be the norm.
Cell phones were only made available to the public in the early eighties which I was not old enough to obtain one. They were big and bulky without all the whistles and bells. There was no navigating the internet on the phone. There were no games to play or request an Uber ride but just a fancy toy for riches. A day many people started to socially disconnect with the person next to them on a train, a bus or at a restaurant. Not only are we disconnected from total strangers or friends but at a dinner table with our family as well. Increasing mobile device usages are disrupting our lives and we have become depended on it. As smartphone technology continues to improve and taking over our lives we have become complacent with immediacy. We are constantly relying on Siri, Google Assistant or unlimited accessing the world-wide web. We do not go to the movie theater as much anymore opting to stream movies instantly instead.
