The book Where The Fern Grows was written in 1961 and the movie first came out in 1974. The book was written by Wilson Rawls. The movie was directed by Norman Tokarr. If you've ever watched the movie you could tell that it was made a long time ago. If you haven't seen or read Where the Red Fern Grows you might not know that it is one of the saddest books/movies you might ever see. To begin with, in the book, this boy Billy has always wanted dogs but they weren't very rich and couldn't afford coon hunting dogs and that is what Billy wanted. So he decided to work for the money to get dogs, he worked really hard and saved every penny he got. Finally he got the money and ordered the dogs. After he got his dogs he practiced hunting with them. Then they entered a competition and Billy went to the finals. When it came time to hunt, Billy let his dogs go find some coins. The weather was getting pretty bad and they couldn't find the dogs. They listened and painted to a direction and found them. There was a whole family of coons in this tree. They realized that Billy's grandfather was missing and had no time to get the coon. Billy got little Ann to search for grandpa and they found him hurt laying on the ground. When they returned to camp, grandpa got patched up and they rested until morning. In the morning the winner was announced and Billy didn't win but the winner thought that Billy deserve the gold cup and stach of money. Next, there are many similarities and differences in the movie and the book. In the book Billy really did win the cup. In the movie the winner gave Billy the gold cup and stacks of money because he thought that bully was the new winner. In the book Billy wouldn't let anybody bury his dogs except for him. In the movie Billy's dad buries the dogs. There are many similar parts and in the movie. For instance, Billy's grandpa fell in both the movie and book.
