The Greatest Love of All: Whitney Houston “With a voice unparalleled in her, or perhaps anyone's, time, she became the first artist in history to have her first seven singles reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.” (Rys). Whitney Houston is famously known as the greatest singer of her generation. Houston was a big part of the music and entertainment industry. Music has been a huge part of society since it was even a thing. It helps us relax, express emotions, and can even change our mood. Whitney dealt with many of her own difficulties that made people admire her even more for her bravery and inspiration. Along with drug problems, Whitney’s marriage was immensely unstable. Billboard says, “A dysfunctional marriage, the weight of continuous drug use, the pressures of fame and the mercilessness of the media wore her down, her public appearances becoming more erratic than elegant.” (Rys). It was speculated that Houston has been doing drugs for a long time and it was the only downside to her that people saw. An article states, “We also see her struggles with drugs, her fights with Brown, a miscarriage during filming of "The Bodyguard" and a devastating fallout with her father.” (Johnson). Houston had conflicts with drugs, marriage, and family. On top of all these allegations, Whitney presumably had a “secret lesbian relationship”. According to The Irish Times, it explains, “Last year, Brown told Us Weekly magazine that Houston was bisexual and that she once had an affair with Tupac Shakur. He went on to say that Houston kept her relationship with Crawford hidden because of Cissy.” (Brady). She had many disturbances going on in her life all at the same time and for many, that’s a lot to handle. Even though her life was intense, Houston still kept her head up high. Johnson also says, “‘She had her demons. It reminds us of being human. It reminds us some people we greatly admire have weaknesses. And there was something relatable about her.’” (Johnson). Whitney Houston stayed courageous till the end, making her an empathetic idol to individuals, which is why she is still cherished despite all of the debates about her.
