Like most places, Maycomb County, Alabama was full of hardworking people of integrity, as well as dishonest, indolent citizens. Atticus, a distinguished lawyer, raised his two kids, Scout and Jem, to be disciplined youth, practicing honest morals. Everyone in Maycomb admired Atticus for his respectable character, just as they all abhorred the Ewell family, for their cheating and lying ways. However, Atticus’ prominent role in town was suddenly challenged when he was chosen to defend in court Tom Robinson, a black man whom Mayella Ewell accused him of taking advantage of her. Eyes that once looked up to Atticus with deep admiration, now glared at him in disgust.

In the story To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus Finch is largely characterized in chapter 10 and 11. To begin, Scout reveals he is fifty and that Atticus, “did not do the things our schoolmates’ fathers did: he never went hunting, he did not play poker or fish or drink or smoke. He sat in the livingroom and read.” (10.89) These things show that Atticus is down to earth and didn’t have children until later in life.
Tom Robinson, who is a good and innocent person. But like Boo, the town of Maycomb decided they did not like him when he was convicted and it didn’t help that he was black. There are bad people in Maycomb, but there are also good people who get lumped into the evil
During the 1930’s, a great depression swept across America. A man by the name of Atticus Finch, district attorney of Maycomb county, resides in the small town of Maycomb during this time with his two children Jeremy Atticus Finch and Jean Louise Finch also known as Jem and Scout. As the district attorney he is called upon to defend a black man by the name of Tom Robinson who was accused of raping a white woman. Although he is highly respected through the town, the town resents him for doing so even tho it is his job as district attorney. The people of Maycomb respect Atticus Finch because he speaks for justice while they do not have the courage to and for the simple fact that he undoubtedly stands up for what he believes is right.

Atticus knew the consequences, and the outcome of the whole situation, but he still stayed faithful to his high morals and values. Despite drawbacks, Atticus Finch was wise to defend Tom Robinson. Throughout history, we’ve seen countless examples of self sacrifice for the moral high ground. However, Atticus Finch, from To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, wastes his energy in doing so. Atticus Finch, a middle-aged lawyer in Maycomb, Alabama, takes the impossible case of defending Tom Robinson, accused of raping a white woman and faced with a death sentence. The whole book centers around the year leading up to and after the trial, taking place during the Great Depression. Although Finch put up a good fight, he wasted his time trying to save Tom’s life.
In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus is courageous, wise, and well - mannered. One of the main characters is known for being courageous. Atticus was Tom Robinson’s lawyer in trial against Bob Ewell’s accusations of Robinson raping and beating Ewell’s daughter Mayella Ewell. Atticus always told his children, Jem and Scout not to judge anyone because of their race, religion or gender. Atticus is a respected lawyer that has built quite a reputation in Maycomb. When Atticus is given a rape case, he is against all odds. Tom Robinson, a black man, has been accused of raping Mayella Ewell, a white woman.
Atticus Finch is very courageous and this is evident when he stands up for what he believes in despite the prejudice of other people in Maycomb. Since he goes against the status quo, he gets discriminated against. Other people criticize his actions behind his back, and
Throughout life, society creates stereotypes and misinterpret people. This often has severe impacts on the person’s life and their interactions with outside world. Similarly, Harper Lee connects people in her novel to an innocent songbird: the mockingbird, a symbol that she uses a numerous amount of times to connect between the title and the main theme. Throughout the novel, the mockingbird represents two things: an innocent creature that perishes by acts of evil and a symbol of innocence and purity that does no harm while spreading joy and happiness. Mayella Ewell, Tom Robinson, and Arthur Boo Radley identify as mockingbirds - pure, innocent characters that face injuries through contact with evil.
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee many characters are victims of the harsh conditions of Maycomb County. Often those who are seen to be metaphorical mockingbirds are punished the most. A mockingbird is one who only wants and attempts to do good. Characters such as Boo Radley, Jem Finch and Tom Robinson are exemplars of mockingbirds in Maycomb. In the novel it is explained by Atticus that killing a mockingbird is a sin because they do not do anything to harm to us like nesting in corncribs, or eating up the gardens, they only sing for us.
Text complexity to achieve student career and college readiness Only about half of the nation's high school ACT test takers passed for college level reading (ACT, 2006). Communication skills are continuously rated high for college/career readiness, whereas these ACT results have shown, only about half of the graduates have these skills at this level. Teachers are challenged every year with instilling these skills to each generation of students that come through the school systems. With updated common core state standards or CCSS, the need for more complex texts and informational reading for career and college readiness are being stressed. Educators everywhere are left with answering the question of what can we do?
