Mayella Ewell, the prosecutor, blamed Tom Robinson, the defendant, of rape on the night of November 21, 1935 at Mayella’s home in Maycomb, Alabama. The trial brought up included Tom Robinson, Mayella and Robert Ewell, Heck Tate, and Atticus Finch. Heck Tate and Robert Ewell were the witnesses for Mayella’s side and Atticus was the lawyer to Tom Robinson. This was such an important trial, whether the event actually happened or not, because Tom is a black man and Mayella is a white woman. The evidence provided shows that Tom most likely did not rape or beat Mayella, but her father was the one who could have beat her.
He asks her to just let him go, after she wouldn't let up he to tries to get away and flips a chair that's the only thing disturbed in the house when he left. Even Tom’s white boss comes forward and says Tom is a good man. All the fight and evidence and good testimony and accusations and Tom was still convicted guilty even with Atticus fighting so hard for him. The whole black community was devastated the only good this that came out of this court case is Atticus exposing Bob, and the time they took discussing what should happen to Tom. Since rape was a
Which is exactly what the jury had not done, the case is evaluated based not on facts but on the sheer base of the colour of the skin on the victim and the defendant. Atticus has proven that Mayella tempted a man of colour for which Bob had severely punished Mayella. But in the Maycomb society, the words of a black or a man of colour are overruled by that of a white man. There is no universal moral that states for a human being to feel superior to another simply because the colour of the skin is pale white like that of a ghost; so for the Maycomb community to think that such decisions are ethical and morally correct is trash. It is not morally correct for these white men to sit in a jury and make decisions based on personal basis or resentment.
We also learn about the family life, Mayella states that “He is tolerable, ‘cept when-” but we don’t learn from Mayella but it is implied that it probably refers to Bob's alcohol addiction. Also in her testimony, she says she “Won't answer a word you say as long as you keep on mocking me” (Page 206 Chapter 18). She says this because Atticus calls her terms like Miss and Ma’am. She acts very abruptly, to the point where she cries and has to make the court take a brief recess. She may be doing this so people sympathize with her, which is a common move to get things to be
He knew that he was the one who hit his daughter and sent an innocent man to jail for the crime he committed. Lying under oath is already a very bad crime, but lying to hide the crime he committed is even worse. The results of Bob Ewell's actions hurt more people than you may realize. He made her daughter go through court, he lied to everyone around him, he used valuable government resources for this trait, and worse of all Tom Robinson lost his life and his wife had to go through the pain of hearing that she would never see her husband again. The love of her life is dead.
With that information, and the short temper that he exhibited during his testimony, and the hints towards his history of drinking, it wouldn’t be far fetched to believe that he was capable of beating Mayella. In Mayella testimony on page 208, when Atticus asked if Mayella loved her father she was confused by the question. After some clarification Mayella said “He does tollable, ‘cept when- … Except when nothing.” This hesitation left room for question about how Bob treated Mayella when no one was watching.
The townspeople we're so fixated on the thought that a black man did something to a white woman, but they didn't bother to listen to the facts and understand who really did it. Atticus is not one of these people who thought that he was better than people. Atticus was on top side from the start of the trial all the way until the end. He knew that Bob was The one who was guilty. Statements were too inconsistent and all over the place to make it truly clear who would take the fault.
This is crucial evidence that shows he didn’t beat her like she said he did. Mayella’s dad told her to lie, but she could’ve still told the truth. Atticus mentioned how she continued to lie because she didn’t want everyone in town to know she was attracted to a black negro. “I shut my eyes. Judge Taylor was polling the jury: “Guilty...guilty…guilty...guilty…”
Atticus is known around town as one of the best lawyers. Bob knows this and still lies in front of the court, committing perjury. First, Bob Ewell shows the most courage in the novel because he tried to murder
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the story is set in the 1900’s, Maycomb, Alabama. During this time there was racism in the south and segregation which separated the whites and blacks from everything. There was also the Great Depression, the whole country was poor and people living in the country had to trade and do other jobs for people to either pay them off or to buy something from them. The trial in this book is about Mayella and Bob Ewell, two white people, claiming and arguing that Tom Robinson, a black person, raped Mayella Ewell. This trial is really important because at that time in the south, white people took advantage of black people and their kindness and thought they would take that or shut up just because they were black.
Not only did Bob Ewell committed a sinful act against his family, he blamed his actions on someone else. Obviously, his actions display how he committed evil actions. In addition, he fought and harassed people who he opposed of. This includes Tom’s lawyer and his family, his own family, and townspeople. He was rated sixth on the evil scale because of the unjust actions that he caused, and committed.
Bob Ewell does not like black people. When he saw Mayella kissing Tom, he flipped out. When Mayella was giving her testimony, she would look to her father as if to ask for the answer. Mayella would leave gaps between her statements. She needed time to think of the right answer.
In this paragraph I will be questioning the Ewells’ reasoning for lying. While reading the court scenes, I got the feeling that Mayella and Bob had separate motives for trying to convict Tom. There are quite a few reasons that Bob would want Tom Robinson convicted. His most demanding motive would have to be the need to cover up the fact that he abuses his children.
When Mayella, and Bob Ewell, lie to the jury, they do it to make themselves look good. They went out of their way to make an official case about the scenario. Therefore it put Tom Robinson’s own life on trial for something he did not commit. Bob, got to do The only reason Mayella, and what they did, was because of the racial discrimination during that time. Everything that took place in the courtroom shows the loss of childhood innocence and extreme racial prejudice.
This discussion will be telling the differences between geeks and nerds because most people would usually mix up the two because they think they are very similar. First of the word Geek, meaning a sociable inept person and unfashionable, was originally the word “geck”, a German word meaning fool. Nobody actually knows where the word nerd came from, but it means “a contemptible person who lacks social skills, foolish or boringly studious”. Nerds and Geeks are two different types of people because one is smart and studies, while the other is interested in things like comics and they basically run the internet. They have some things in common, even though they are different like they both hate bullies, parties, and sports.
