One theme in the novel Tangerine by Edward Bloor is, disasters can sometimes turn into positive change. During reading, one can notice how thinking something will turn out good, won't. As said in the book, Paul thinks moving to Florida will turn out fine, but when they arrive, there are many complications like when the school is thought to be safe but it isn't, because it is built on a sinkhole. After the devastation, the school needs relocation fast. The school has a meeting and Paul realizes he is open to a new future.

Unfortunately Luis Valdez creates a complex character call Tiburcio Vasquez of his melodrama, he like a Robin Hood who commit crimes but has respect and kindness to those around him, kind of hard not to root for him to get away. Tiburcio state “The women are not to be hard and no one I repeat no one is to be killed” (Valdez 116). In this play, Vasquez is a notorious California bandit ho commit murder which makes him the antagonist. On the other hand, Vasquez Is the main character he has a kindness and flattering aroma around him which also makes him the protagonist.
Intriguing, inventive, and unusual are some words to describe the novel Tangerine by Edward Bloor. This novel is about protagonist, Paul Fisher, who just moved from Houston, Texas, to Tangerine County Florida where he has to deal with natural disasters striking everyday. On top of that he has to withstand his dissolute brother, Erik Fisher, the antagonist at home. He also needs to endure the favoritism portrayed by his father towards Erik and his football dream. In this novel we find out how Paul Fisher last living in this irregular neighborhood.
The concept of a hero and villain are not prevalent within the novel, because that would imply a winner or a loser. The narrator, who the reader can assume shares similar ideologies to Vonnegut, explains how he does not believe that war should be glorified nor does it warrant any victors. Instead, Vonnegut focuses his attention on the idea of an outcast or an underdog. In a way every character has these qualities, Billy is made to seem crazy by his daughter, Montana is extremely sexualized, and Weary is damaged and alone. All of these characters are struggling because they are trying to make sense of what they have endured (this concept of soul searching, and going within one’s subconcious is seen metaphorically in the constant appearance of caves).
The supporting characters are Jordans friends from Washington Heights, and the new friends that he makes at his new school. I believe that the antagonist would be those who make fun of Jordan. If I were to pick a main antagonist, I would choose Andy. This is because Andy mainly picks on Jordan and bullies him one on one. Jordan just wants to be able to fit in at his new school and to stay connected and not become distant from his old friends.
The novel Legend by Mari Lu stands out from others. Mari Lu uses a protagonist and antagonist to add a conflict in her novel. Doing this shows that “narratives contain a primary protagonist, who is the focus of the narration. In contrast, antagonists are usually portrayed in a negative fashion, and thus, viewers may feel a sense of counter empathy toward them”(Magliano 1). The antagonist should be at least the equal in strength of the protagonist, and preferably stronger.
Many stories in literature are not complete without an Antagonist. The Antagonist can be the embodiment of evil or just a roadblock for the main character to overcome. In the short story Sweat, written by Zora Neale Hurston, features an abusive husband, Sykes, as the Antagonist. Sykes dominates and abuses his hard-working wife, Delia. Whereas, Edgar Allen Poe, author of The Cask of Amontillado, uses an ambiguous relationship between Fortunato, a man full of ego and arrogance, who wrongs protagonist Montresor.
Erik is very rude, disrespectful, dissolute, sneaky, and egocentric, versus his brother being very kind and caring to others. Erik’s actions of evil traits are ongoing, but definitely more pronounced by his actions after Mike Costello’s death. “I carried my bags of groceries on into the kitchen and set them down. Then I heard a strange sound. It was the sound of voices in the backyard.
A protagonist is the main character and focuses more on their experiences. The protagonist in this book, is 16-year-old Gemma. An antagonist is usually “the bad guy,” or the character that opposes the protagonist. The antagonist in this book is Ty, the kidnapper.
Paul tries to get the love and attention of his mother and yet she is distant and dissatisfied with him. This makes her the antagonist. Regardless of Paul’s efforts, his mother always seemed to be displeased. I would describe Paul as a round character because his responses were very apparent throughout the story. The mother was the flat character, as she seemed to be aloof.
An antagonist is more often than not seen as someone or something negative in one’s life or story. Antagonists are the enemy, the bad guy, or anything that prevents the protagonist from achieving goals. The actual definition of an antagonist is an opposing person or force, in other words, something that holds you back. When you try to examine personal antagonists, everything bad in your life will come to mind first, but in reality not everything that holds you back is bad. For example, being cautious may keep you from doing certain things, but it also protects you from being open to every opportunity offered to you.
