The second main character of the story is Anna Sergeyevna. At the beginning of the story, Chekhov does not mention her name and calls her just a "lady with the dog", or "the lady in the beret", but after Gurov and lady got to know each other, she gets the name Anna Sergeevna. The author underlines that Anna Sergeyevna came to the resort with a small dog and this dog goes with her anywhere where she goes. The dog in this story is an indirect symbol. They both understand that their lives like parallel roads. They both cannot change anything and it gives them a kind of sadness, but at the same time a distant, barely perceptible, hope. Chekhov emphasizes in the narration, “big wet flakes" and "degrees above freezing-point" as symbols of Gurov's life. The author writes, "Snow was falling in big wet flakes.”It's three degrees above freezing-point, and yet it is snowing," said Gurov to his daughter. "The thaw is only on the surface of the earth; there is quite a different temperature at a greater height in the atmosphere."(176)". The atmosphere implies a Gurov's social life where people are deprived of their senses, where is cold and lifeless, where freezes his soul, and where is no hope. The surface of the earth is his hidden and secret life. Three degrees above freezing is still quite small, but somewhere, deep in his soul, there is a hope that there is a person whom he loves with all his love and whom he needs. He describes love as very bright and beautiful feeling, but society imposes limitations and restrictions on people. He is able to describe the landscape, portraits of heroes, and also their rich inner world. Writer tends to draw a psychological portrait, showing the actions of the heroes and their feelings. One of the most interesting works of the writer is the story "The Lady with the Dog", which tells of the intense inner work of two people, "awakened from spiritual slumber" affected by great feelings of love. For Gurov, this very ordinary and not particularly attractive woman, becomes the meaning and only purpose of his life. This love arises gradually, but settles deep of Gurov's heart and soul. There is unclear future for both of them. They live in their present and think only about particular moments that occur presently. Gurov's love creates a range of feelings and writer does not condemn for sinful feeling. But there is a clear idea for the readers that life without love is even more sinful.
