Love, Death, and Romeo Over 40% of deaths by suicide are linked to relationship problems. Similarly, the play Romeo and Juliet is 99% about relationship problems leading to suicides. One of the protagonists in this story, Romeo, is responsible for all of these deaths. He kills Mercutio, Tybalt, Paris, Juliet, Lady Capulet, and ultimately…himself. Most of these deaths are accidental or not purposeful but all could have been easily avoided. Romeo has many responsibilities being the son of Lord and Lady Montague and could have easily had the intelligence to prevent the tragic ending of the play. The third and final fault of Romeo that leads to the tragic ending of the play is his foolishness. Romeo is foolish in committing suicide because he thinks Juliet is dead when if he had waited he would have seen Juliet wake up. His knowledge of this fact is based on the word of an ignorant servant. He is aware that Friar Lawrence is currently the only person that knows what’s going on with Romeo and Juliet. He is not even a little suspicious when he does not receive any letter from the Friar about this news. He asks the servant, “Hast thou no letters to me from the friar?” and does not think anything of it when the servant replies, “No, my good lord,” (5.1.31-32).
