Romeo and Juliet is a Shakespearean tragedy displaying a star crossed romance between two young lovers. From the beginning we, as the viewers, are aware of the eventual demise of Romeo and Juliet. There are multiple accounts of foreshadowing throughout the play, giving it this distinct feeling of fate, an unavoidable conclusion bound to happen regardless of what actions are taken, but who or what’s really the most responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet? I believe that Romeo and Juliet are the ones most responsible for their own tragic demise. While other factors certainly play a part, in the end Romeo and Juliet are the ones who made the conscious choice to take their own lives. In this case Romeos hamartia was his rashness or recklessness. We see examples of his rashness multiple times throughout the play. An example of this is when, though due to some prompting on Benvolios part, he goes to the capulet's party (act 1 scene 4) despite knowing the possible consequences with the intent of seeing rosaline which is actually the way he met Juliet in the first place.
