The young lovers had secretly married with the assistance of Friar Lawrence, his hopes being to mend the feud between their houses. However, tensions escalate after Romeo's friend Mercutio is killed in a duel with Juliet's cousin Tybalt, causing Romeo to kill Tybalt as a form of revenge. As punishment Romeo was banished from Verona, meanwhile, Juliet's parents had arranged for her to marry County Paris. The reason being that they could have made different choices, to which no one influenced, that would have led to a different situation where they would not have died. The first choice that had consequently led to Romeo and Juliet meeting would be Romeo deciding to go to the Capulet's ball. “I'll go along no such sight to be shown,/But to rejoice in splendor of mine own.” (1.2.103-104) Romeo's choice to go isn't influenced by Juliet being there but by the chance of Rosline being there.
