None of the Greasers seemed to have had many or any positive influences in their lives. Although the Soc’s generally come from much better off backgrounds than many of the Greasers, they still lack positive role models. For example, the death of Bob, a Soc, was due to him trying to jump Johnny and Ponyboy and trying to drown Ponyboy in a fountain. Bob obviously didn’t have any real need to be in the Soc gang, and doing this behaviour, as he was well off and presumably had a much more comfortable life at home as compared to many of the Greasers, but his parents didn’t set many boundaries or have much interest in what he got up to, as told by Randy. This is an example of the lack of a positive role model regardless of the parental or financial situation of a character.
The Greasers had a very poor lifestyle. They didn’t have everything, and they had to work and help to support their families and learn to live on their own. Another reason they are different is because of the clothes they wear. The greasers wore leather jackets and other tough-looking clothes, and their hair was greased back. The socs dressed nicely and owned all of the expensive items.

Gangs, or groups are really important because once you are in one, you feel like you belong, and you are most likely among people that care for you. Being in a gang, or in a squad is like having a second family, or your own family, depending on your relationship with your actually family. In the book, “Outsiders”, the greasers, and the Socs were two different gangs that were rivals. The gang is important to the greasers because the gang is the only true family some the greasers have. It is also important because being in a gang gives you a sense of belonging, and they help you whenever you are in trouble.

Gang Definition and Classification Classifying gangs is no simple task and to begin you must thoroughly understand the definition and requirements of being classified as a such. There are multiple definitions of a gang, according to The Modern Gang Reader but the one I will focus on is “A street gang is any durable street-oriented youth group whose involvement in illegal activity is part of its group identity.” Now that the definition has been identified it needs to be broken down further to clearly differentiate why this definition is essential.
Throughout the 17th-century gangs have been causing havoc in people's life and destroying the society. The National Institute of Justice (2011) has defined a gang as "A group of collective members which create an atmosphere of intimidation among citizens. " Many of these gangs are well organized, using different forms of violence to control neighbourhoods and to conduct their illegal activities. The National Gang Threat Assessment (2011) reports that “Gangs are responsible for an average of 48 percent of violent crime in most jurisdictions.” Street Gangs have caused incidences of violence that is confined in the inner city of many countries.
