During the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, the Japanese destroyed nearly 20 American naval vessels, more than 300 airplanes and killed over 2,000 American soldiers and sailors. The attack was caused by multiple events and conflicts that took place beforehand. One of them was the fact that the United States was unhappy about how Japanese invaded and extended their territory into China during World War II. Trying to stop Japan, United States decided to cut off their trade on oil since Japan received 80 percent of its oil from the United States.
