In the play "Romeo and Juliet'' by William Shakespeare many people know that Romeo and Juliet killed themselves, but do you know the cause of it? Was it love, or was it hate? Well the reason that Romeo and Juliet killed themselves was because of hate and not because of love.

The first reason that Romeo and Juliet killed themselves was that the two families hated each other which caused people's acts to be unclean. In other words, the powers of hate caused people to be guilty of murder and such. We first found out about the families hating each other in the prologue. It says in there: "From ancient grudge to break new mutiny,/ Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean" (Prologue. Romeo killed Tybalt because of the curse of hate. Romeo killing Tybalt lead to getting himself kicked out of the city. Since Juliet couldn't get to him, she needed a plan, which a man named Friar Lawrence hatched. He would give Juliet a potion that makes her look dead but she isn't and he would send Romeo a letter to let him know that she isn't. Unfortunately, he didn't get the letter and assumed Juliet was dead and killed himself because of it. None of this would have happened if Romeo didn't kill Tybalt because of hate. The text says before Tybalt is murdered by Romeo: "Away to heaven, respective lenity, / And fire-ey'd fury be my conduct now! / Now, Tybalt, take the "villain" back again / That late thou gavest me, for Mercutio's soul, / Is but a little way above our heads, Staying for thine to keep him company. / Either thou or I, or both, must go with him" (Act 3, Scene 1, lines 83-89) Romeo is showing the anger he had and how he intended to kill Tybalt.
