Prior to the United States joining the war, it wasn’t looking good for the Allies. Germany was on the offensive and feeling very cocky and confident. Germany was within 40 miles of Paris and if they managed to conquer Paris, their chances of winning the war would increase tremendously. Unfortunately for the Germans, the United States showed up just in time to fight them off. 600,000 American soldiers fought the Germans off and German numbers began to dwindle. Eventually, Germany ran out of men to fight so they started to recruit boys as young as 12 years old. America joined the war in the first place because President Woodrow Wilson believed he had no choice. Germany tried to get Mexico to join in an alliance with them against the United States to hopefully get them to enter the war. Also, Germany went against the Sussex Pledge to not sink passenger ships without warning. This caused America to join the war fighting with the Allied efforts. Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire surrendered, leaving Germany to fight by themselves. The United States had a successful attack on St. Mihiel, and Germany was still losing men left and right. St. Mihiel wassuch an important victory for the United States because they aquired a trenchwith electric lights, food, equipment and more amo. By using heavy artillery, tanks and soilders on foot, the United States was able to push Germany back a signiigant amount (Document 5). Mot importantly, the American soilders gained hope that brought them further along the road to vistory
