Why Do People Break Social Norms

Social norms tell us what is or what is not acceptable in certain situations. They are an element of culture that is established by people’s perspectives on what they deem socially acceptable amongst each other. Social norms are important in society and in social interactions. Some people break these social construction based on personal development or when they are in a personal space. When one is out in public there are a number of things one would not do because it is socially unacceptable. For example, common courtesies such allowing persons their personal space and not singing loudly on public transportation. The first place was in my math class. I was talking to myself about after school plans and making an order in which I would carry out the activities. Some people thought I was talking to them and others gave the expected reaction of looking and me. The second place I choose to carry out this assignment is in the supermarket. While I was picking up a few items, I was talking to myself about the different foods I like and what I can make for dinner. People looked at me as expected, but just continued to do what they were doing. My third location was in Forever 21 while I was shopping around. I was talking to myself about different outfits for different occasions, and I got a few comments and opinions from others. An employee was helping me with making decisions on what to buy and a woman told me that the outfit I was pairing together was cute. The fourth location was while I was going through the train station on my way home. In this scenario I did not get any reactions. In the train stations people are constantly rushing to get to their next destination and just ignored me. The fifth, and last trial was amongst my friends in our rooms.
