He goes on to insist that the medical community just like the food industry also make money off of theories. New theories mean new drugs, treatments, procedures, and let’s be real here the medical industry does not make money off of healthy people it makes money off of sick people. When using this argument Pollan (2008) refers to Walter Willett who said, “You would not expect such a medical community to be sensitive to the cultural or ecological dimensions of the food problem-and it isn’t. We’ll know this has changed when doctors kick the fast-food franchises out of the hospitals.” (pg. 142) Denis Burkitt presents and answer to the question of what to do to stop the western diet.

However, after the novel’s release, the government was forced to create a system to ensure the food being produced was safe and made in an ethical fashion. First was the Pure Food and Drug Act, which ensured that food and drugs being made were clean and free from pathogenic agents. Today, agencies like the FDA and USDA are in charge of ensuring that food is safe, factories are safe, and that the food is healthy and clean enough for eating. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) now monitor beef, and other animals, living, shipping, and slaughtering conditions. They also monitor factories to ensure that damaged or diseased animals are not put into products.
James R. Baker, MD and chief medical officer of Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE), writing an article for the STAT Magazine, discloses information regarding the pharmaceutical drug pricing controversy, in his case EpiPens, that affects many middle-classed Americans. By using the appeals of ethos, logos, and pathos, Baker presents a viewpoint that is antagonistic of the business practices pharmaceutical companies have been following for the last decade. One of the ways Baker acknowledges their argument is by appealing to the emotion of his audience with his introductory sentence that shows how parents are forced to make hard choices surrounding the health of their children. “All too often, parents of children with food allergies are forced to make hard choices. Many are splitting up twin packs of EpiPens, others are keeping them past their expiration dates, delaying filling the prescription,
After watching this video where Michael Moss speaks about Salt, Sugar, and Fat in the American diet, my views about the food industry have changed. I never realized that the government was supporting the dairy industry. It amazed me to learn that the reason Americans are so attached to their dairy products is due to the strong relationship of the government and the dairy industry. Personally, I really enjoy dairy products.
Food processing industries want to exploit their profits and will do so through any means necessary, legally or otherwise. “The intense pressure to return a bigger bag of money every year has prompted a number of ConAgra employees to break the law” (Schlosser 159). These companies will gather to discuss prices, fix them, and do anything else that they can to pull in a larger profit. “He was in the same plight as the manufacturer who has to adulterate and misrepresent his product. If he does not, someone else will;” (Sinclair 134).
The application of this, however, is inherently flawed and in terms of medical care our citizens are not receiving proper care. Throughout Fast Food Nation Eric Schlosser emphasizes the large amount of untold victim ’s stories and Schlosser narrates an incident that occurred in the workplace in order to stress the importance
Starting the New Year in January of 2001, a lawsuit that involved several people sued Taco Bell, stating that Taco bell chain adds extra meat fillers in their “seasoned beef” instead of real ground beef. To be exact the accusation said taco bell’s meat was “taco meat filling”. They stated it consists of extenders and other non-meat grains and the “seasoned beef” in its tacos and burritos was made up of 35 percent beef. Another problem was that taco bell also betrayed customers but it violated federal requirements by advertising “taco meat filing” as beef. Taco Bell serves an estimated amount of customers of over 35 million a week.
The opponents of this proposal were wrong in that compromising food quality and mislabeling for more money does not outweigh the public’s interest in their
Author of the essay “Eat Food: Food Defined” Michael Pollan, states that everything that pretends to be a food really isn’t a food. Michael persuaded me into agreeing with his argument by talking about how people shouldn’t eat anything their great grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food and avoid food products containing ingredients that are unpronounceable, lists more than five, and contains high fructose corn syrup. He opened my eyes to information I wouldn’t have thought about or researched myself. He got into depth about a type of Sara Lee bread that contains way more ingredients than needed to make the bread, including high fructose corn syrup that isn’t good for you. Marketers are doing this to sell more of their product by making it taste
In 2014, Michael Pollan's "How A National Food Policy Could Save Millions of Lives" was published by The Washington Post. Pollan urges the need for a food policy. Stating that "the food systems and the diet it's created have caused incalculable damage to the health of our people and our land, water, and air. " In his statement, Pollan's use of logic is used to convince his readers that there must be change to create healthier lives of Americans. To support his claim, Pollan provides us with the reality of the current policies and public investments.
The Obama administration actively promotes the food safety, but fails to advertise effectively against the negative aspects of relations that involving food safety. A more recent and especially important example of poor and bereft government assistance is the aforementioned Flint Michigan water crisis. Governor, Rick Snyder of Michigan and his personally appointed mayor and city council decided to change the water source of Flint from the clean Lake Huron to the toxic Flint River, all to save money. The governor’s office eventually found out how toxic
Americans did not care about what was being served to their children at school. Every social media site people have compared our school lunches to other countries. The first lady Michelle Obama had made some changes to what was being served at lunch. I intend to prove that if we do not start paying attending to what are children are

yes so I ask them, is that burger real such as real beef’ they say yes so I have to explain to them that you’re not eating real beef you’re eating a burger that has a lot of chemicals in it. They look at me crazy but they get mad because when they start to get sick and gain weight, it’s because of the fast food they`re eating. “Our government ought to be working to foster a sense of responsibility, in and ownership of our own health”. Balko (What you eat is your business, 2004). We should take responsibility of what we eat not put it on the government they don’t make us eat fast food we do.
