A young boy who loves science once sat down and read a poem. The poem depicted the world ending in flames, after bombs blew all civilizations to dust. From that moment, he vowed to save the world from ending in the same fate. This child was Leo Szilard, and many years later he accomplished his goal, just not in the way that he had previously planned. On July 16, 1939, Einstein signed a letter to the current president of the United States, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, outlining the need to build an atomic bomb before Germany did. At the time, science was beginning to become a big deal, and Einstein’s letter was the first time that physics and politics directly came into contact, but it was certainly not the last. After Einstein interjected for Szilard, …show more content…

Szilard escaped Germany and fled to America where, while he was there, he realized that if one could cause multiple atoms to split in a sequence, the result could be even more deadly than a bomb. Szilard figured that if he knew this, Germany couldn’t be far behind, and a weapon of that caliber in Hitler’s hands would be disastrous and would not end well. So, Szilard searched for the only man who he knew could get the world’s attention—Albert Einstein. Einstein’s letter succeeded in gaining the attention of the president, and gaining funding for America to build their own atomic bomb first. With that funding, America created the first atomic bomb and detonated it on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan ending WWII. The detonation of the atomic bomb forever changed warfare in the world. The complete devastation in the aftermath of the war showed exactly how destructive fighting between countries could be. It proved that humans had the technology to end their own existence and wipe out all life on earth. So, the bomb had the effect of limiting war. Since countries saw how many lives could be lost in a single moment, they had to be more hesitant
