Federal child labor law minimum work age is 16 for any jobs, and exempting agriculture and entertainment industries. Until states enact their regulations at 12 can work outside school hours seven days a week, not benefit from the FLSA provisions of overtime, age and hour protecting young/teen workers. Federal laws have set the guide supposedly under the guise of freedom, economies, state autonomy and accountability. Federal laws prohibit farm worker age 16 and below from handling hazardous tasks on farms, and protects age 18 and below workers in non-farm jobs. However, the states have studied their economies and made the right decisions related to child farm labor.
I was asked by my cousin Laith Hattar to work and help him run his dads AT&T stores. I didn’t take it very seriously at first because I was in love with Political Science more. I was first trained as an inventory employee. He had me working weekends all day long, I had to close and open the store which was a big responsibility at first. Later that year he had me manage the Broadway AT&T store for a little, which was much easier because I had a little experience from the other store that I worked in.
In 1841 there was a child labor law that was made relevant in stores hiring twenty or more workers. It had set a minimum age for employment of at least eight years. The law also banned kids under twelve years of age from working more than eight hours per day, and allowed children of twelve to sixteen to work a maximum of twelve hours a day. Although American has set a law to stop child labor, there still remains multiple countries without any child labor laws.
The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), is in charge of all minor labor laws. FLSA has set the minimum employment age to fourteen years old, yet most businesses require employees to be sixteen and older. The unfair law has made it difficult for young teens to find jobs. Studies have shown that teens with job experiences have learned early skills that can be used throughout their adulthood. Teenagers as young as fourteen should be able to acquire and hold paying jobs.
Outside Challenges My challenge is personal. Twenty five years ago when my father died. It was devasting to me because awaiting his recovery after surgery, the doctor told us everything went well with his triple heart by-pass and he was in recovery. As my family and I waited in the waiting recovery room a warm wave came over me.
Everyone has challenges that can affect their life and aspirations. I find that it is how one internalizes those challenges, how one pushes through those challenges, and how one learns and grows from those challenges that allows one to overcome those challenges so they do not impede personal growth. While I have had a lot of challenges, one challenge was my distaste for writing. The rules were fluid and the answer was not set which confused me when I was younger. This pushed me to focus more on math, as I enjoyed its fixed rules and formulas.
Over the summer, I work at summer camp, a job that has challenged me in the most incredible ways. Through my work as a summer staffer at my sleep away camp, I have seen children grow and challenge themselves to
The Greatest Challenge Did you know what you wanted to do when you graduated high school? I did not know what I wanted to do when I graduated so I talked to my family and friends about what should I do. My father and mother wanted me to go to America to study. The idea scared me because I had never been so far away from my family before. I applied for the scholarship and was accepted, so soon I found myself on an airplane to New York.
There were no “now hiring” signs up in any business windows, and this particular store was no exception. This woman gave me the opportunity to prove my words and offered me a job. As it turned out, the eighteen year old requirement was a personal mandate from the manager, which she put aside to give me my first job. Everyday after school, five days a week, I would walk the half mile to work four hours before walking the two and half miles home. It was this phase in my life, my first job, that really kindled my passion for the feeling of accomplishment that hard work
To challenge new things is always exciting and being nervous. In my life I tried a lot of things to look for fun and new. Looking back on my life, I could say my biggest event is definitely becoming a college student. First of all, I do not remember when I decided to come to the U.S. College, and what made me to come here. I completely had no idea to go to Japanese university.
Unfortunately, I was not aware of how much of a challenge I would receive, but I thought to keep my conscientious mindset throughout every challenge. Throughout my struggles, I learned that my conscientiousness is measured more
It is an inherent trait of true challenges that they place those who attempt to accomplish them outside of their comfort zone. Branching out from the safety and repose of one’s own comfort zone can be a humbling experience, and can be met with disappointment if great thought is not placed into a viable strategy. It is my belief in this assertion that has driven many of my life choices, and has granted me with success in the first few years of my
My challenge was applying for my first job and realizing it was time to start becoming an adult. It was just another typical Wednesday afternoon, I was procrastinating on doing homework like usual. This time my thoughts lead to needing a job. I realized I need
At the age of 16, I was working and getting paid the minimum just to maintain experience and pocket change while getting an
