Dear Mr. Brandon, I am writing to explain why I should pass the Academic English 20B class and what is my progress in this class. Firstly, I enhance my writing and reading ability. At first, it is hard for me to write an essay with more than 400 words, not to mention the appropriate thesis, claim and evidence. But when I read more in-class articles, communicate with classmates and listen to the teacher’s explanation, I start to understand how to write a strong and persuasive essay with the right strategies. For example, my first draft of the paper one, an article about defending a tradition, is not an essay with complete thesis, claim, and evidence. I used to mechanically follow the writing style which I learned from my previous English teacher in high school. It’s a style that uses same or similar words or sentences every time for the start and the end. In China, I was told that it’s a proper way to get a high score. However, when I take the Academic English 20B class, I know that it’s a horrible way to write because it will make the readers feel bored and have no willing to go on reading. As a result, I start to use the different words to express and try new high-level phrases. For instance, the word choice of my second draft for paper two is not good or appropriate which makes my essay not convincing. Then, I spend time studying what is the best way to express my meaning and change a lot for my paper two even I don’t have a chance to get feedback on the paper two anymore. Through the score isn’t available till now, I have strong belief that the final draft of my paper two is stronger and more convincing than the previous
