Forensic Technicians are an important part of law enforcement. They make up 11% of law enforcement. That may seem like a small amount in the law enforcement field, but they have such an important role even in such small numbers. This is why I am interested in this field. I would love to play such a massive role in impacting the lives of the people in my community. I am interested in a career as a Forensics Technician for several reasons.One reason is to help my community. One way that forensic technicians help the community is by giving closure to the families. According to bls.gov the training required for a forensic technician is on-job training before they can be able to work on cases by themselves. They may work under experienced investigators where they will learn about proper procedures for collecting and documenting evidence. They also will learn about laboratory specialties on the job. The time this training will take depends on the specialty of the technician. Most of this training will take less than a year. Forensic technicians must also be able to pass an exam after their training before being able to work on individual cases. You go from a local Forensic Technician to a state forensic technician and even a federal agency for forensics, the pay may vary depending on what you are doing. There are many other job opportunities that you can become with the experience of a Forensic technician. Other career options include: forensic investigators, forensic specialist or even a fingerprint technician (“Career Guide,” 2023). Even though you can transition into these jobs you will most likely need on the job experience. The average starting salary for a Forensic Science Technician is $61,930 per year. Some of the pay scales on bls.gov state that “The lowest 10 percent earned less than $37,670, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $103,430”. Salary ranges can vary widely depending on many important factors, including education, certifications, additional skills, the number of years you have spent in your profession. The pay may also vary depending on the location of work; some places may pay more than others due to the cost of living and local tax rates.
