Why I Want To Be A Special Education Instructional Assistant

I have been a full time IA in a special education class for intellectual disabilities since September 2016. As a substitute teacher/IA for the academic year 2014 -2015, I was a short term IA (three months) substitute in a special education class at Herndon Middle School. In that same academic year I was asked by the principal of Clearview Elementary in Herndon, Kimberly Willison, if I would long term substitute for a new IA position that was acquired in that same classroom, I accepted the request. At the end of the school year the principal encouraged me to apply for this new position for the next academic year, 2016 – 2017. I have become more motivated each year to learn and develop into a highly qualified, learned Special Education Instructional Assistant. I never thought that at this point in my life I could become so very passionate about a new field, a new path in my life and I attribute this fervent motivation to the special education teachers I have worked with, Joanne Morgan – Herndon Middle School and Michelle Mort Ranta Clearview Elementary. They showed me that I could make an enormous contribution in the life of the students; I could make a difference helping them find their way in the world.

This is a great year for our class; more of our students have been able to move into their general education classes for some academics. I accompany several of our students to their classes. I see the thrill they get from being able to spend more time with their peers and I enjoy seeing their enthusiasm. In this situation I see my role as not only supporting their academic curriculum but also making sure that their self-esteem is kept high, showing them that their identity is of great importance to us in the special education
