In Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, Banquo and Fleance play important roles in the play shaping the overall outcome of this written work. Banquo is a fellow general and companion of Macbeth, who receives a prophecy from the Witches along with Macbeth. This Prophesy saying that Banquo will father a line of kings, this new found knowledge will ultimately leads to his murder. Fleance is Banquo's son who by escaping Macbeth's murderous plot, will go on to be father to a line of kings as well as king himself. Although these characters don’t have that many lines in comparison to other characters their lines and actions have a great deal of symbolism and foreshadowing that complement the building up of the plot. In addition, to serving as the constant of this written work Banquo serves as historical figure used for the liking of king James which claimed to be his descendant. Although, readers are given few lines and information about Banquo’s son. Fleance’s function is to show of what is to come in the future. By successfully escaping Macbeth’s murderous plot he ensures that he will be a future king which at this point of the play gives the reader a sense of hope that Macbeth’s rule will eventually fall. After this occurrence Shakespeare doesn’t mention Fleance for the rest of the play. However before the death of his father Shakespeare depicts that he is Banquo’s apprentice/squire evidence that foreshadows that he is preparing to be like his father and eventually king. Shakespeare may have also used Fleance’s character to make a historical relationship between him and King James. In Brief, these Banquo and Fleance have an important impact on the play Macbeth, their presence really complements the play because it makes it easier for the reader to pick up clues from the text.
