Christopher Columbus was the man credited with the discovery of the New World, even though the Native Americans and possibly the Vikings discovered it before him. He is celebrated as an American hero among many, but among some, he is a monster. Columbus was the man that tried to discover the westward route to the East Indies for the Spanish (14-1), and ultimately, he opened the Americas for colonial expansion to Europe. He is said to have enslaved many Native Americans, committing horrible atrocities to them. The question on the table is whether Columbus was a hero or villain.
I believe Christopher Columbus is a villain. I think he is a villain, because he forced the Native Americans out of their homelands while bringing other pilgrims and diseases back with him. Columbus discovered the Americas by accident, but he wasn't the first one to discovered it. Although, he took all of the credit which, was very greedy of him. King Ferdinand and Queen Elizabeth funded Christopher Columbus’ voyages only because Columbus promised them land, riches, and spices.

Christopher Columbus enslaved the natives, he killed millions of natives, and conquered the natives land for his own. Therefore, Christopher Columbus was a villain because of his many heinous acts.
When I was younger I was under the impression that Christopher Columbus was a great man and that he discovered America. We celebrate Columbus day because we honor him for “discovering America”. From this new information that I have learned today, Christopher Columbus is not the man iv have been taught about.
Christopher Columbus is a man who is commonly depicted as a hero and great explorer who discovered our modern day America, but many of the so called “facts” are not all completely true as people would like to believe. Columbus was undoubtedly a courageous explorer who brought many new ideas, cultures, and resources to be exchanged between the New World and Europe. While this is true, it is not uncommon for people to forget the harmful effects brought along with the voyages made by Columbus and the darker details of his times in America. Columbus started from humble middle class family. Columbus was born in 1451 in the Republic of Genoa as the oldest of his four siblings.
Do you believe that we should celebrate Columbus Day as a national holiday? Do you believe he is a hero? or a Villain? Some people have different points of view when it comes to a question like this; sometimes, their opinion may reflect their religious beliefs or because of all the terrible acts against humanity in the New World. We also do have to remember that he did discover America; he started the Columbian Exchange,and brought many different values to this new world he just discovered. Even though I believe that he is a hero and we should celebrate him through a national holiday, I want to give you a chance to decide whether you think he is a hero or a Villain and choose if we should celebrate him as a national holiday.
And that is why I am grateful to have learned many details that shine the light on the way that Christopher Columbus actually was like, a villain. I have my reasons for considering Columbus a villain. For example Because of him there is much less diversity in animals. And if that wasn’t bad enough he is also the reason why there are very few native americans left.
Finally, an achievement as an explorer that has made him famous that might make him appear to be a hero for certain people is all of his efforts to spread Christianity. He voyaged across the globe to spread new religious ideas and to possibly convert people. One failure that might qualify Columbus as a villain is his cruel mistreatment towards the native people of the island that he discovered. He abused the power he was given by using it against the native people, the Tainos. Another failure as an explorer that has made him infamous that might make him appear to be a villain is destroying the unique culture and tradition of the native people.
But, I think that he is a hero for many reasons. Firstly, although he never treated people nicely (like most explorers) he did treat them with respect. People have very different opinions on Christopher Columbus. My opinion is he was a very greedy man, the only thing he cared about was money. He would do anything possible to get it, even if he was already rich he would want more and more. Some things he did was took 10% of any riches in a land he might discover. Also, he didn't care whose flag he was sailing under, he only cared about getting the money.
Putting aside all the horrible things Columbus did, he did help colonize North America. He opened up a new world where people could go to freely express themselves, it was the land of the free. People could freely practice their religion and many could start a new life. Another reason why people don't want Columbus day to change is because of his Italian background. Many italian americans are proud of Christopher Columbus because of his italian background.
