In today’s generation, we view college as something we must do after high school. It is no longer optional. College is a gateway to the middle and upper class as we see it. All thru school, from elementary to high, we are taught to believe that we need higher education in order to succeed in life. “A college degree is the key to realizing the American dream, well worth the financial sacrifice because it is supposed to open the door to a world of opportunity” says Dan Rather, an American journalist and former news anchor. But with tuition prices on the rise, a flux in trade-based job openings, is a college education really necessary? There are people in this country that has never stepped foot on a college campus and are doing better financially than people who have Bachelor’s degrees, so just how important is going to college?

We are pressured by parents, counselors, and our peers to go because they feel that it’s the right thing to do. In the essay by Caroline Bird, an American author who is against the trend that all young people go to college, "College is a Waste of Time and Money", she states that students go to college because "Parents wanted them to attend, or some other reason completely different to the course of studies for which college is supposedly organized."
