Sparta was once one of the most important Greek city-states throughout Greece, famous for their military lifestyle. When you think of a Spartan warrior, you vision a man with huge muscles, red cloaks, long hair, and sharp swords. Spartan warriors were the best and feared fighters in Greece, they spend their whole lives learning new fighting techniques and serving their home, Sparta. At around six or seven years old, young boys would be taken from their homes to be trained as Spartan warriors.
Many years ago, the ancient Greek society believed in many Gods. The Gods would help or punish them. There was a God of the sea, God of love, God of farming, God of parties, and many others. The people of ancient Greece centered their lives around the Greek Gods. One God that affected the ancient Greek military was Ares.

The ancient Greek society was one of the most advanced societies we have ever had. The Greeks gave tremendous contributions to things such as the Olympic games, democracy, literary classics like the Odyssey and Iliad, Philosophers such as Aristotle, Socrates and Plato, and advancements in math and science. But there is one big part of ancient Greek society that is very popular, which is polytheism; the belief of multiple gods. The greeks had a total of twelve major gods, some notable gods are Zeus, Apollo, Hades, and Poseidon. In this essay I will mainly focus on the gods Zeus and Hades.

I am going to investigate what they were needed for, and how they became to be the gods they are now. Contrary to many modern religion’s depiction of the afterlife, the Greek afterlife was rather bleak. The common belief was that upon death, a mortal’s soul would be transported to the Underworld. The Underworld was divided into different sections, and every soul would be placed in a section according to what they accomplished and how they acted during their time on earth. While some exceptional Greeks believed they would make it to the most select portions of the underworld, the common Greek man would not enjoy an eternal paradise or life among the gods. While most of the underworld was not depicted as a modern interpretation of hell, it was not a place of bliss.
Death is a sad thing, but in both instances, they find a way to make it joyful and to celebrate and not mourn. Beyond the comparison of funeral traditions, Aeneas, the Day of the Dead, and Jazz Funerals or New Orleans believe that there is life after death and that the spirits will continue to live beyond their deaths. During the day of the dead, they leave a trail of a flower called marigolds as a pathway for the deceased to find their way home and they use bright colors to decorate everything because they believe that they will see the colors and come home. In New Orleans, they strongly believe that death does not stop after their life has ended. Firstly, the social system is patriarchal and women hold an inferior position in society. In book two, one of the suitors tells Telemachus how they forced his mother, Penelope, to finish weaving the burial shroud. Ancient Greek society had very specific gender roles, expecting men to be masculine and domineering while women were passive and obedient. Secondly, slaves serve family and the guests’ needs, for example the household’s slaves were used to entertain the suitors.
This quotation is significant because it represents Socrates’ ideas about death. He believes that fearing the unknown is unreasonable because we don’t know what happens after death. Socrates also believes that “being dead is one of two things” (Socrates 58); either you feel nothing at all or it is a “journey from here to another place” (Socrates 59). Fearing something we don’t now is not going to get us anywhere except limit our potential. Although, death is a frightful concept, it might also be a good thing.
As in most societies “The death of a member of a society threatens its stability and the descendants’ performance” (H°aland). Some may mourn in the way depicted in The Iliad, “Had taken in raids, ran shrieking out of the tent/ To be with Achilles, and they beat their breasts/ Until their knees gave out beneath them.” (XVIII 31-33). In ancient Greece, the burial of a loved one tended to be part theater, part opportunity to show off, and part power play.

They associated each of their gods with a different aspect of life or nature. For example Zeus was the king of the gods, Athena was the goddess of wisdom, Dionysus was the god of wine, and the list goes on. The ancient Greeks erected massive temples to these gods for worship. Each god or goddess had his or her own temple for sacrifices or offerings. They Greeks believed sacrifice was necessary to appease the gods and keep everyday life fruitful and peaceful.
