Gun Control Come and take it! Gun control is a term that refers to laws that can regulate the sale, creation, transfer, ownership, and modification or use of firearms. Gun control is a huge issue for Americans, as over forty percent of homes in the US have guns. Likewise, over eighty percent of Americans say that they will vote for a congressional candidate based on their beliefs about gun control (“Background on Gun Control”). In addition, the NRA, National Rifle Association, is one of the most powerful groups in the US, politically speaking. Criminals, just like everyone else really do not want to be shot and killed, and will even try to avoid committing crimes where they think guns are present. Guns are a pivotal part of American safety. Banning guns from citizens who abide by the law will not take guns out of the hands of criminals. In fact, many studies that have been conducted support this observation. Since the start of Texas ‘Right-to-Carry’ law in 1995, the murder rate in Texas has averaged thirty-percent lower than before the law took effect (Gun Control Facts). In contrast, since 1950 almost every mass shooting (except for one) has taken place in a state that abides by strict gun control laws (5 Facts About the NRA). As James Earl Jones brilliantly said, “The world is filled with violence. Because criminals carry guns, we decent, law abiding citizens should also have guns. Otherwise they will win and the decent people will lose.” Over the past twenty years gun sales have gone up and homicide rates committed with firearms have gone down by thirty percent. Since the city of Kennesaw, Georgia created a law demanding every home to have at least one gun, crime rates dropped more than fifty percent over the past twenty-three years, and there has been an eighty-nine percent decline in burglaries (“5 facts about the NRA). Taking guns away from law abiding citizens will not keep guns away from criminals. That is why, in fact, they are classified as criminals, because they do not respect the laws of our country.
